Welcome to Aussiezone 228

The season wouldn’t be complete without at least one side selling up, Sakujo and Cheltenham will be missed. Sadly that depletes the A-League stocks even further and the promotion of sides such as the Hasslehoff Babes proves just how far the standard has fallen in recent seasons. The A-League is lucky to have 10 competitive sides these days.

But for the 228th edition of the aussiezone we welcome Therk as new Hockey RA. Eric contributed as Hockey National Team coach. As well as an assortment of articles from the Zone Admin forum contributors Bebben from Sweden and Rodrigoazul77 from Chile.

Enjoy the read and see you again at the end of next season, Matt.

Bondi Icebergs complete the League, Cup double. A rare achievement in the unpredictable world of Managerzone and mark a successful rebuild with a wholesale squad sale. Mid-season challengers Crimson Eagles held steady, but couldn’t match the consistency of Bondi, while Dunder Mifflin dropped away badly to finish 6th. Shrewsbury Biscuits steadily climbed the table, but a few too many draw prevented them from progressing any higher than 2nd.

Glasston were consistent all season and netted 4th as a result. The big improvers from the half way mark were the Amputees, who resurrected themselves from 9th to 5th with an improving young squad. SYD sat in the mid table all season and secured their direct safety with a round to spare.

Cheltenham decided to sell up and leave the game, so with sakujo being a good sport he played a youth team and gave Narraweena the points they needed to make the playoffs. Which based on their goals for and against record was the least they deserve for their efforts. Myrtou FC score well, but they conceded just as easily, still they’ve given themselves the chance to remain in the A-League and given the declining population of Aussie managers is becoming easier with each passing season.

This phenomena has resulted in some teams gaining promotion to the A-League that in the past wouldn’t have had a chance of even winning Division 1. The Hasslehoff Babes are an example of this, as although hoffs team are better than they use to be, they still aren’t that good and so the season shows. Playmaker was on a mission to concede 400 goals in a season and another 21 nil result in the final round ensured such an improbable total was attained.

Despite their lowly position all season the Amputees on field statistical consistency allowed them to gain points in draws and losses. Likewise the Shrewsbury Biscuits were the same except the results fell their way more often than not.

It looked like a clean sweep of all the awards for Bondi, but a final round losses was enough for them to drop into 2nd as the Amputees and Shrewbury Biscuits shared the team award for season 54 of the A-League

Clearing the passage

So another season goes by and winter has descended onto the continent. A Cheltenham and Bondi are selling up, Otago have suggested the same as well. So another season will come with at least one easy beat team. Glasston have an aging lineup and their competitiveness will dpend on how many survive. But the longer we go into the new age deteriorations the less viable an aging team will become.

Though we’ll have the ability to regain balls for our players under the age of 30, which for myself will come in handy soon enough. More youth players on the training field and training camp places will be available. I like the changes, but can understand that some consider them be too much of a change from the traditional model of gameplay. Let’s face it though, the game will never be the same and for myself that is a good thing. Let hope the new sim will offer a balance between alternative styles of gameplay, wing play still needs to be an important part of the game as that is the modern way the game is played, but through balls need to be incorporated to give short passing a fight chance.

So much for preseason prediction, also it bears to mention that with name changing bandwagon playing 15 year olds and going for the all-time record of goals conceded in a single season you can detract 20 goals from every team 8th and above. The Amputees were unlucky to play them in the first round and only get 5 for a walkover.

Bondi leading is not a complete surprise, they’re in great attacking form and have conceded the least so it is well deserved. The Crimson Eagles have done very well for themselves and along with Dunder Mifflin are the surprises of the season so far.

Shrewsbury Biscuits and Glasston have not been as strong this season, but they should have plenty of improvement left in them. SYD and Cheltenham are occupying their usual league table positions.

Myrtou can score, but they also concede. While the Amputees have played well without the results being favourable. Narraweena seem to be the unlucky team in 3 last, while the Babes just don’t have the quality to offer more than an occasional underdog win.

Not entirely sure what happenned there. Couldn’t lay a tackle in midfield and no one wanted to shot. Might have to revise the expectations for the season down to hoping for a playoff spot

Midway Passage

It’s been a strange season so far, 10 sides are all quite even and results are difficult to predict. On current trends Narraweena and the Amputees will fight it out for the last playoffs spot. Bondi have become favourites for the title, Crimson Eagles are the best of the promotion sides and surprises a few.

The trend of Aussie managers not selling their talent and developing players in house has created a lot of sides that are very good. Unfortunately we don’t have enough active managers to fill out our A-League with 12 competitive teams. But this season is the closest in terms of overall team strength in quite a while.

The 55th running of the A-League welcomes five new teams. City Water Motel, Abbotsford FC and Skoolage United won direct promotion and the Melbourne Rockstars and Rodborough got through with some fortuitous results from the Playoffs. Abbotsford, Melbourne Rockstars and Rodborough are all first time A-League Clubs, with City Water Motel and Skoolage United returning after rebuilding their playing rosters. For City Water this was a short turn around, but Skoolage have been adrift for some time, down as far as Div 2 for a prolonged period of time.

As I’ve mentioned in my Playoff article both Rodborough and Melbourne Rockstars can consider themselves fortunate to get through, as neither side was the best in their group. So we can expect to have the trend of a strong top half of the ladder winning big against the teams that have either sold up completely in Cheltenham who assume short price favouritism for the Spoon and Bondi Icebergs running a largely U/21 squad. Both teams should finish 12th and 11th respectively.

Only Bondi Icebergs who have already sold up, Dunder Mifflin and Glasston have players retiring, two in the case of Dunder Mifflin and four for Glasston. This is bound to affect their competitiveness and both teams finished comfortably mid-table last season. How much further they’ll drop depends as always on the quality of the sides that come up.

Of the teams that remain from last seasons A-League the Crimson Eagles, Shrewsbury Biscuits and the Amputees all have good squads and will feature prominently at the top of the table. There is always one promotion side that will be highly competitive and join the fight. This season it’ll likely be Skoolage or City Water Motel. I’m basing this on the luck based nature off the Playoff results for Rodborough and Melbourne Rockstars, which along with Abbotsford come from Div 1.1 and they all seem of similar strength. Which for me places them towards them bottom of the league vying for regulation playoffs spots to avoid automatic demotion.

Words from the Managers

Senile Old Men – Crimson Eagles

Top 3 was a good result for first season up in A-league since returning to MZ.
Players are approaching the right age, and I still have a foreign spot to fill (hopefully a striker with more than 4 heading to open up the possibility of wings)
Bullish on another top 3 berth if deterioration isn’t too harsh on the newly turned 28yos

Scruttino – Amputees FC

The team’s inability to score despite taking plenty of shots let us down last season despite solid statistical performances. Our talisman up front Remy Bundy is still young at 24/25, he’s still got some experience to gain before reaching his peak, but the future looks bright and we’re hoping to crack the top 3 for the first time. Shrewsbury are still the favourite, but we’ll give them a run for their money.

Paulg7 – Rodborough

Hello everyone, great to be part of the big A-League for the 1st time. Kinda been stuck in 1st division forever so this is a new challenge for me and my boys. I will probably stick with the same group of players that got me here. Anything around mid-table I would call it a success.

On the other hand I’m going to keep investing in my youth academy, as this is one of the best parts of MZ – Training potential superstars. Always a chance one of them will get a league game debut.
Paul

Dagriggstar – Skoolage United

Pretty lucky to have won div 1.3 last season to be honest, think toss got simmed in a couple of key games and I slept walked to the title. On one hand I do have a couple of NT level players but on the other hand got a back 4 composed of three 22 year olds and zero first XI players with more than 8 tackling (I do have a 20 year old dude on the bench with 10, maybe I should play him). I’m not expecting miracles don’t be surprised to see a few sales mid-season since I have a group of 4 older guys that may not meet the age profile for the team I’m building…

Eric the Eel – Shrewsbury Biscuits FC

Who knows how it will go! Happy with top 3. Sold oldies and youngsters not quite there yet. Some superstars approaching 21-22 years old so who knows? Need more foreigners 😀

A-League Season 55 Ladder Predictions

I’ll break the table up into groups of teams rather than where I think they’ll specifically place at the end of the season. From the looks of things this could be another open field of teams where promotions sides have a good chance of surviving.

Top 3 contenders – Shrewsbury Biscuits FC, Crimson Eagles and Amputees FC

Promotion smokeys – City Water Motel and Skoolage United

How far will they fall? – Glasston (4 players retired) and Dunder Mifflin FC (2 players retired)

Relegation playoff contenders  – Rodborough, Melbourne Rockstars and Abbotsford

The bottom two – Cheltenham and Bondi Icebergs (2 players retired, but troy has sold up, so it doesn’t matter as much)

The Australian Ice Hockey League never ceases to surprise. Except of course if you are the Warringa Wizards who took the silverware again. That’s 3 times from the past 4 seasons. A continuation of their dominance has broken the backs of a few teams this season. GRATEFUL DEAD were looking quite promising at the end of last season and have pulled the pin along with Dunedin Thunderbirds HC. They depart the AIHL with Yaroona and new league participants Ice Road MutherTruckers.

New debutants The Jugular Vein have finished in a commendable 4th. Finlandia HC and  Brisbane Roar HC both have had strong finishes to finish runner up and 3rd place respectively. In 5th place the Kangaroo Crusaders have outperformed Relaxmore who had a promising start but completely faded mid-season.

The two teams in the playoff zone Monegeeta and Caboonbah survived their playoffs to compete again in the AIHL.

7 U21 Malaysia 7 1 0 6 10 18 -8 3
8 U21 Guatemala 7 0 0 7 3 52 -49 0

The Big games were against Uruguay, Canada and Mexico. Though at the time we did know that all top 4 sides progress into the final stages. We lost to Uruguay but won against everyone else.

Last 16

U21 Uruguay – U21 Australia
2 – 4

In a strange draw we had to play Uruguay again. Seriously Managerzone should employ a seeded draw for the final stages of all competitions. But we had the better of the game without putting the score on the board. We levelled it up late in the game before a red card to Uruguay gave us a penalty which our central defender Bunworth slotted and Robbie Kruse sealed with his 2nd goals as a sub.

Quarter Final

U21 Australia – U21 Mz Country
3 – 0

We entered the match favourites for the win and took hold of the game with a great display of football in the battle of the small userbase countries. A deserved victory which Kruse again sealed with 2 late goals as a sub.

Semi-Final

U21 Australia – U21 Indonesia
3 – 2

Indonesia have come on leaps and bound in recent years. Their national team is no longer the easy beats they once were and we got a slice of luck with Indonesia receiving a red card early in the game. Despite having the man advantage, more shots and possession we couldn’t put Indonesia away and the levelled the match late to send it into extra time. Once again Kruse was on hand late in the second half of extra time to give us the win.

Final

U21 Argentina – U21 Australia
9 – 1

Knowing that we were massive underdogs and going to face a wing tactic we sort to employ a one sided short passing counter. Sadly things went very wrong and we accept the blame for a poor tactical decision in the final. But still Australia doesn’t reach many finals so overall the team played very well.

Given that many of the players from the previous U/21 squad have now made the seniors national team, we are hoping that people keep developing these players so that the future of the national team remains strong.

National Team Ice Hockey Article

Firstly thankyou to the couple of Aussie Ice Hockey managers still out there that voted me in for another term as National Team manager. With interest in the sport at an all-time low there were probably only a couple of you but thanks anyway! I have enjoyed my time representing our team and keeping the U21s and Seniors functioning.

The last two seasons have seen us struggle as a Nation competitively as less managers train teams and run squads with good homegrown players. This was particularly noticeable with the U21s who were unable to qualify for the U21 World Cup. In qualifying, wins over Denmark and Kuwait, a draw with Bulgaria,
and losses to Belgium and the Czech Republic saw us needing to beat China.

Ultimately, we lost 1-0 and missed out on World Cup action for the first time in some seasons. Most of the team came from a handful of AIHL clubs, but apart from 5-6 superstars the quality on a whole was at the lowest I’ve seen.

The seniors had an equally frustrating time, participating in the 2015 Confederations Cup. This is a tournament we have had success at before, regularly making the semi-finals. This time however we were beaten by Canada in the first knockout round and the season was over. The team struggled with deterioration and retirements and the next crop coming through is a little useless! Not many friendlies were played either.

No excuses from me, after many seasons of dedication I too gave up on Ice Hockey and sold up Dunedin Thunderbirds HC for some nice money. Nav and his team Warringah Wizards should have the run until he too gets bored, and then who knows what will happen.

Good luck to future National Team Coaches and hopefully one day we can return to greatness!

Senior National Cup Season 54

Final

City Water Motel – BONDI ICEBERGS
3 – 4

City Water Motel again provided us with a surprise taking the game right up Bondi, turning the final between a Division 1 and A-League side into a game worthy of being a final.

It was a cagey opening as both sides missing chances in front of goal, before a Prus double before leading into half time gave Bondi a good lead to consolidate after the break.

Another quiet opening in the second half came a went before Braedan Ross for City Water netted a double in 6 minutes to level the contest with 20 minute remaining. The game then went up a notch as both sides searched for the winner and Prus thought he had it in the 86th when he completed his hat-trick. Yet City Water came right back at them and levelled the game up for a second time in the 90th minute to send it into extra time.

Upon the resumption in golden goal extra time nothing had changed and both sides kept up the pressure until it final broke in the 105th as Prus scored his 4th and Bondi players mobbed him as they played stacks on to celebrate their first senior cup success in quite some time.

City Water were far from outplayed and had more shots, yet Bondi took the possession. So in the end it came down to an astounding player in Prus have a season to remember breaking the deadlock. One of the best finals there ever been in the senior national cup.

3rd Place Playoff

Narraweena Azzurri – SYDclub
2 – 3

A great contest that held the crowd in rapture until the very end. Cugat secured his hat-trick in the first half took SYD into the break with a 3-1 lead. Justino Gregory further reduced the deficit in the 55th minute, but despite keeping up the pressure subbing late in the game Narraweena couldn’t produce the equalising goal to take the game into extra time, giving 3rd to SYD.

Semi Finals

BONDI ICEBERGS – SYDclub
4 – 0

A classic case of attack versus defense as Bondi and Prus once again showed their class to make the scoreline seem a blow out, but the stat show that SYD Club attempted 73 tackles. So they really let them fly with both feet studs up, unfortunately none of their shots passed the brick wall of Fasey in the Bondi Goals to send Bondi through to the final.

Narraweena Azzurri – City Water Motel
0 – 3

More passes, tackles and shots with greater percentages of efficiency, along with more possession made City Waters quarter final victory over Crimson Eagles no joke. They comprehensively outplayed Narraweena from start to finish to well deserve a finals berths on their own account.

Quarter Finals

Amputees FC – BONDI ICEBERGS
0 – 1

This was a slugfest. Neither side gave an inch but over the course Bondi edged the possession and shots and so their goal in the dying seconds of the game was well earned granting them a semi-final berth.

F.C.Ailsa – SYDclub
1 – 2

In a close game the extra experience and class of Cugat and his 2 goals gave the win to SYD Club. Putting an end to the surprise run of FC Ailsa, but it’s good to see another young team coming through the ranks alongside Rangers – Real Madrid.

Crimson Eagles FC – City Water Motel
1 – 4

In somewhat of a surprise result. A red card in the 44th minute to Crimson Eagles turned an even contest on its head. City Water then put in 4 second half goals and ran away with a comprehensive win.

Glasston – Narraweena Azzurri
2 – 3

This was a really good contest. Fan Xun and Glasston took the early lead before Gledden levelled and then put Narraweena in front before half time. The second half was even as two well matched sides let the tackles fly as they cancelled each other out until with the last kick of the half Fan Xun pulled Glasston off the canvas as he levelled the scores. Then game then continued in the same hard-nosed fashion until the 124th minute when Gledden sealed it for Narraweena with his hat-trick sending Narraweena through to an improbable semi-final.

Last 16

BONDI ICEBERGS – Skoolage United
6 – 1

This game was a one sided contest with Prus winning it off his boot with 6 goals in a team that had more shots but lost out on the possession

Cheltenham – Amputees FC
1 – 3

3 first half goals for the Amputees, 2 to Bundy and 1 for Lungarov set the game up and despite not scoring again the Amputees held 59% of possession, preventing Cheltenham from getting back into the contest. A late red card to Cheltenham was more of a formality than a game changer as Cheltenham had already lost by then.

Abbotsford FC – F.C.Ailsa
0 – 1

Despite dominating the game and having a man advantage from the 28th minute onwards FC Alisa couldn’t capitalise until the 91st minute when Norwegian Jens Slavesen broke the deadlock. The goal came more as a relief than anything else and he sunk down on the pitch as his teammates surrounded to celebrate his goal and their teams win.

SYDclub – Rangers – Real Madrid
5 – 0

The game itself was a close contest on all but the scoreboard as Cugat ran wild and netted 5 goals all to himself playing as the lone striker. Rangers – Real Madrid can consider themselves unlucky not to score, but they’ll be back as they are a team on the rise.

Shrewsbury Biscuits FC – Crimson Eagles FC
1 – 2

This top of the table A-League heavyweight bout was an epic contest. The Crimson Eagles had more possession and shots but their early goal in the 2nd minute to Monico was cancelled out in the 68th by Ulizes and it went into extra with the deadlock unbroken. The tight contest kept on going until 107th when Berke Cubit stepped into the spotlight and took the prize of a quarter finals berth with a clutch goal.

City Water Motel – The Smoking Tree
2 – 1

The all division one contest was an even encounter and neither side score in the first half. Then Braedan Ross took the game by the scruff of the neck and put them 2-0 up with 20 minutes remaining. The smoking tree then went on the attack and got one back but time was their enemy and the game ended in a win for City Water.

Arrested Developers – Glasston
1 – 2

Glasston won the possession and Arrested Developers had more shots, Glasston scored early twice and had their lead cut in half before the break. But afterwards despite pouring pressure down on the Glasston goal Dale Barling held firm single turned shots away and made the game Glasston’s for the taking.

Dewrang Lions – Narraweena Azzurri
2 – 5

Robbie Kruse and the Dewrang Lions actually took the lead first, but it was one way traffic from then on for Narraweena. 3 goals before halftime and 2 more afterwards made the match a foregone conclusion long before the end, despite Dewrang scoring again.

5 Pukatika 10 1 2 7 5 37 -32 5
6 PINKBULL 19 10 0 3 7 5 42 -37 3

In the absence of any A-League sides Arrested Developers made hay while the sun shined. This left the Dewrang Lions to battle it out with the Kangaroos for 2nd in which the Lions prevailed.

Group 2

  Team M W D L + = P
1 Rangers – Real Madrid 10 9 1 0 44 4 40 28

5 Brisbane Roar FC 10 1 0 9 11 51 -40 3
6 Canalpin 10 1 0 9 4 78 -74 3

Another group of life without A-League representation and Rangers – Real Madrid produced another display of fine Football to make it a sweep of all their group stages in national cup competitions for the season. A better defence allowed the Smoking Tree to prevail in 2nd over Crystal Phallus despite them sharing the same goal difference.

Group 3

  Team M W D L + = P
1 Narraweena Azzurri 10 6 2 2 23 9 14 20

6 Hop Skip Jump 10 2 0 8 7 34 -27 6

Despite struggling in the A-League all season and being likely to achieve automatic demotion Narraweena Azzurri put that behind them in the national cup to top their group and beat The Crimson Eagles and A-League high flyers into 2nd. The rest tried valiantly but didn’t have the quality to challenge the top 2 regularly, with a surprise bombing of Dunder Mifflin in 5th.

Group 4

  Team M W D L + = P
1 SYDclub 10 7 1 2 48 10 38 22
2 Abbotsford FC 10 6 3 1 50 13 37 21

5 AMICI 10 3 0 7 20 49 -29 9
6 Sandhurst 10 1 0 9 7 99 -92 3

Abbotsford turned what appeared a cake walk for SYD upon the release of the group stages into a tough contest. Both prevailed, yet Ghinnighi and Telita made them earn it.

Group 5

4 Gunyah 8 2 0 6 11 36 -25 6
5 Relaxmore FC 8 1 0 7 6 50 -44 3

Three A-League sides in a small group meant that the strongest in Shrewsbury Biscuits and Cheltenham would survive. As in the A-League the Hasselhoff Babes didn’t have what it took to challenge them.

Group 6

  Team M W D L + = P
1 City Water Motel 8 7 0 1 47 12 35 21
2 BONDI ICEBERGS 8 7 0 1 41 7 34 21

4 Ayreon 8 2 1 5 17 26 -9 7
5 Joachim Wiking 8 0 0 8 0 83 -83 0

The shock here was that City Water topped the group over the current A-League leaders Bondi. The rest were left in their wake.

Group 7

  Team M W D L + = P
1 Glasston 8 7 1 0 57 1 56 22

Glasston were the favourite and made it known early. The race was then for 2nd, an improving FC Alisa took the chances given to them and made it through.

Group 8

  Team M W D L + = P
1 Amputees FC 8 8 0 0 49 4 45 24
2 Skoolage United 8 5 1 2 28 15 13 16

U/23 National Cup Season 54

Final

Ayreon – The Smoking Tree
2 – 4

Without a semi-final guide to gauge the strength of Ayreon their 10 man quarter final victory would have to be their line in the sand, and it served to be a good measure as both sides put in an even contest.

Ayreon took the early lead with a brace to Alexandre Turkglu to go 2 up, before the Smoking Tree leveled the scores before half time with Bernie Rafferty and Larkins Mcvey putting the ball past Arjen Lucassen.

Both teams took stock a half time and re-emerged with renewed focus. Ayreon pulled their subs early in the second half yet they failed to take the game away from the Smoking tree and when defender Malclm Lyle put them in front in the 84th minute. Before the game was sealed in the 87th by Larkins Mcvey’s second goal and the celebrations could begin for the players on the bench before the final whistle had been blown.

3rd Place Playoff

Narraweena Azzurri – Rangers – Real Madrid
1 – 3

Quite a bit less spectacular than the extra time semi-final loss for Rangers, but at least Narraweena fielded an eligible squad and the game could be played. Sadly the contest was one sided and Rangers – Real Madrid amassed 59% of the possession twice as many shots to come out victors with a comfortable win.

Semi Finals

Ayreon – Narraweena Azzurri
5 – 0

Following on from their surprise victory over Bondi, Narraweena follow it up….. by forfeiting the match through fielding an invalid squad. We can only assume it was a clerical error rather than a big night out.

The Smoking Tree – Rangers – Real Madrid
2 – 1

Now this was a cracking match, there’s nothing like an extra time thriller to make up for a forfeit. In many ways this should have been the final as both were the stand out performers from the group phase.

It was a tight struggle through the first 70 minutes before Kacper Skrzypek put Rangers – Real Madrid into the lead on 71 minutes, the celebration were short lived as Larkins Mcvey cancelled out in the lead 4 minutes later.

Despite Rangers – Real Madrid having more possession, the shots count remained pretty even and it wasn’t until the 101st minute that Romania import Ernest Gilgor score the win to send the Smoking Tree through to the final in front of a parochial home crowd.

Quarter Finals

Dewrang Lions – Ayreon
2 – 5

Even with a red card in the 70th minute Ayreon added a further 2 goals with 10 men to win comfortably. 5 goals to Turkoglu was a huge effort to win the game off his own boot.

BONDI ICEBERGS – Narraweena Azzurri
1 – 3

In somewhat of a surprise result Narraweena Azzurri dominated possession and took their chances to send Bondi out of what has been a success hunting ground in previous seasons, for a well deserved win.

Rangers – Real Madrid – Crystal Phallus FC
5 – 2

The favourite for the title made this game a formality with heavy possession and lots of shots on goal. If Rangers – Real Madrid don’t make the final it will be the result of a huge upset.

Crimson Eagles FC – The Smoking Tree
0 – 4

The Crimson Eagles were put to the sword in a dominant display of football from the Smoking Tree. Group 1 appears to have been a strong one.

8 Hop Skip Jump 16 2 1 13 18 87 -69 7
9 AMICI 16 0 0 16 6 119 -113 0

The Smoking Tree and Narraweena Azzurri had this group under control well before it ended. Hasselhoff Babes, Amputees and Shrewsbury Biscuits were all about the same strength and bogged each other down in mid table.

Group 2

  Team M W D L + = P
1 Rangers – Real Madrid 16 14 0 2 81 17 64 42
2 Ayreon 16 14 0 2 66 14 52 42

8 Brisbane Roar FC 16 2 0 14 14 120 -106 6
9 Happy Little Vegemites 16 0 0 16 0 80 -80 0

Continuing their mastery of the U/xx comps Rangers – Real Madrid again took out the top spot in their group, not undefeated as they tied on points with the rebuilding Ayreon who seem on track to re-emerge in the next few seasons. But both were a step above SYD, Abbotsford and Red Devils United.

Group 3

  Team M W D L + = P
1 Crimson Eagles FC 16 14 0 2 61 12 49 42
2 Dewrang Lions 16 13 2 1 76 13 63 41

8 Sandhurst 16 3 1 12 17 76 -59 10
9 Canalpin 16 0 0 16 0 80 -80 0

Since their return to competitive action the Crimson Eagles have dominated at U/23 level, they have declined slightly as their initial batch of players have aged, but they are still good enough to be tough opposition. With the Dewrang Lions climbing out of obscurity grab a surprise 2nd place, from Glasston, with the rest falling further away.

Group 4

  Team M W D L + = P

7 Polar Express FC 14 4 1 9 22 63 -41 12
8 Dead Dodos 14 0 0 14 0 70 -70 0

A big win for Crystal Phallus in the final round and a draw between Skoolage and Bondi allowed the Phallus to squeeze out enough juice to lubricate their way into 2nd behind Bondi. The rest ended up with a negative goal difference.

U/21 National Cup Season 54

Final

Rangers – Real Madrid – Crimson Eagles FC
4 – 0

Rangers – Real Madrid are on the march. It’s about time a new manager broke through to win titles with regularity, though it seems they will never make the A-League as they prefer the U/xx competitions and are selling the talent that brought their success this season.

The game itself was quite one sided as Rangers scored at steadily intervals throughout the game and when the red card came in the 82nd minute for Crimson Eagles the match was already well lost. But still the Crimson Eagles made another final, so well done.

3rd Place Final

Shrewsbury Biscuits FC – BONDI ICEBERGS
0 – 1

Shrewsbury Biscuits had more possession and twice as many shots, yet they couldn’t score and the game went into extra time. Brandes Hayward then broke free to take his chance in the 101st minute and stole the game for Bondi.

Semi Finals

Shrewsbury Biscuits FC – Rangers – Real Madrid
0 – 4

Both semi finals followed the script of the group phase as Rangers – Real Madrid blew Shrewsbury Biscuits off the park in a dominant display of football.

BONDI ICEBERGS – Crimson Eagles FC 1 – 3

This game was well under the control the Crimson Eagles until a red card in the 57th minute altered the balance of the match. But try as they might, Bondi couldn’t take advantage of the extra man and the match finished 1-3
