The match was evenly poised at 0-0 all when a red card to Bondi just before half time gave Telita the advantage, they converted the penalty and took control of the game. No strikers scored though, with all the goals coming from Telita’s midfield and defense.

Dewrang Lions – Brisbane Roar 31-12-2015 12:00 1-4

The final score doesn’t tell the full story of the match, everything on both sides was extremely even. Brisbane Roar generated a few more shots, but the luck was with them and the goals went in. A good result given they’ve finished 4th in every playoff group I’ve ever written about. Could this finally be their season to get off the bottom.

Brisbane Roar – BONDI ICEBERGS 02-01-2016 12:00 1-0

Brisbane Roar’s Munroe Ashwin played the game of his life repelling everything Bondi threw at him. By the end of the game through 14 saves and 3 lucky escapes off the woodwork, he’d preserved the 1-0 lead gained by Randolph Andrusiow in the 6th minute for the next hour and half. No matter what happened in their last game Brisbane Roar won’t be coming last this season. Bondi on the other hand could feel downright shafted, after a red card in their 1st game and now a simming in the 2nd had them firmly rooted to the bottom of the group.

Dewrang Lions – Telita 02-01-2016 12:00 1-2

With 75% tackles completed Telita put a stop to everything Dewrang Lions attempted, they dominated the game and almost lost it. A Dewrang Lions own goal ended up being the difference as they scored with the last kick of the game. Had they not put the ball in their own net, Dewrang Lions could have got a draw in a match they were evidently 2nd best, yet wasteful shooting by Telita kept them in it right until the final whistle.

Sha Kuan from Bondi finally found the net twice to lead them off the bottom of the group. An even contest shots wise was coupled with a tough tackling Bondi unit that attempted 40 more tackles than their opponents. Defence won the day for Bondi.

Telita – Brisbane Roar 04-01-2016 12:00 2-0

The group decider was not a game Brisbane Roar will want to remember, they were terrible. Telita had 27 shots to Brisbane Roar’s 7. In every other area of the park Telita dominated by an equally large margin, the gulf in class was evident from the opening whistle to the end of the game. Telita earn promotion.

Rather than write it in every game Narraweena played I’ll say it here. They haven’t sold up, Nav has not set an active tactic for his playoff games, had he done so he would have challenged for promotion. Hopefully he comes back in time for the new season and hasn’t left us for good. So all Narraweena games are effectively walkovers in this group and the goal scored against them became crucial.

A big win for the Red Devils

Kangaroos – Skoolage United 31-12-2015 12:00 1-1

The Kangaroos had a slight edge in stats and overall play with a higher passing and tackling percentage, and more shots. But they couldn’t make it count on the scoreboard, so a goal in the first half for Harding to give Skoolage the lead and Travers to equalise in the second was how the match finished.

The Red Devils had everything in control, more possession, passing/tackling percentage and a hat-trick to their striker Teddy Sheringham as the 80th minute went by. The Kangaroos made 3 seemingly forlorn subs to throw everything at them in the last 10 minutes, even with a red card in the 86th minute to Red Devils defender Bruce Hanslow they couldn’t give up a 3 goal lead, right! Wrong, goals in the 89th, 92nd and 95th the last two deep and deeper into injury time from Travers to draw a game in which they were completely out played until the last 10 minutes.

Narraweena Azzurri – Skoolage United 02-01-2016 10:00 0-8

Not quite as many goals as the Red Devils, but still a good win

To say the Red Devils got lucky is an understatement, a red card in the 15th minute to Katona with them up by 1 brought Skoolage into the contest. They began to dominate possession, equalising in the 34th through Harding, then against the run of play Sheringham stole the Red Devils 2nd the get them back the lead at half time.

Whoever won this game was getting promoted and Skoolage would have fancied their chances against 10 men. The second half began well with them drawing level again through Harding in the 55th. But from then on nothing went in, the goal that would have taken them back to the A-League and won them the match failed to materialise. The Red Devils had escaped the playoffs by the skin of their teeth and a big slice of luck.

Kangaroos – Narraweena Azzurri 04-01-2016 10:00 11-0

With the draw in the other playoff game they had a chance with a big winning margin to get through on goal difference. The Kangaroos would need 13-14 goals and they tried their best scoring 11, but it just wasn’t enough.

As you can see in group 2 with all teams level on points, the final table standing reflect who scored the most against Nav, Red Devils won that battle and retained their A-League spot.

Welcome to another aussiezone, now our 229th. Another season is over and the journey begins again. Aussiezone 229 has been written by Rodrigoazul77, Pypedark, Therk and Myself.

There are no national team articles in this release, I’ll wait until the end of next season to bring you both the U/21 and Senior national team campaign reviews. Inside you’ll find football content on the A-League mid-season and end of season reviews. AIHL review and new season preview along with statistical analysis.

Then the biography special features on the Australian Legends, which will appear in the WFO of their final clubs. The legend games will take place next season once we have finalised the Australian tactics. Skoolage were clearly the better team with twice as many shots and a higher percentage of passes and tackles. Narraweena will have to keep waiting until they return to the A-League.

Brisbane Roar – Red Devils United   0-4

Red Devils United were the better side as Brisbane Roar remain favourites to finish last in their group once again. Teddy Sheringham bagged a hat-trick along the way to a comfortable win for the Red Devils.

This was a scratch your head and wonder game. Brisbane Roar had no right to win as they were outplayed in all aspects of the game except a slightly better possession count and Munroe Ashwin who won them the match with 16 saves. A dagger to Skoolage’s chances at retaining the A-League status.

Narraweena Azzurri – Red Devils United                                                                                2-3

This was close, Teddy Sheringham was the difference up front with a brace, to deny the 16 save made by Narraweena keeper Goodward from salvaging a draw, with the last kick of the game. Red Devils got the luck.

Skoolage United – Red Devils United                                                                                     2-2

Sheringham and Gray, the front and the back of Red Devils prevented the better team Skoolage from gaining the win. Skoolage required a win by 3 goals to save there A-League spot and statistically it was on the cards, but this has not been their playoff series and Red Devils United achieve their first promotion to the A-League.

Narraweena Azzurri – Brisbane Roar                                                                                      2-0

Narraweena didn’t score until late in the second half, but they dominated this game and put Brisbane Roar in their familiar place of last in their playoff group.

A very close game that SYD won through Beattie conceding no goals and Cugat scoring 2 goals. Shots, possession, tackles and saves were all close, Hop Skip Jump were unlucky not to score, but they will reach the A-League soon if they keep on their current course.

The Smoking Tree -Kangaroos   2-0

A convincing win for the Smoking Tree. Twice as many shots, more possession, better passing and tackling percentages. Kangaroos assume spoon favouritism.

Kangaroos did slightly better than against the Smoking Tree, but they were still outplayed by SYD across the board.

The Smoking Tree – Hop Skip Jump   3-0

Closer than it appeared on the scoreboard, but a failure from Hop Skip Jump to convert their chances made them slump to a heavy defeat and end their promotion chances. With The Smoking Tree setting up a 3rd round showdown with SYD on who will reach the A-League.

I’m not sure if they had an off day, because the Smoking Tree were much better in their previous games. Yet here they were outplayed by SYD who had twice as many shots, better passing and much higher tackling percentages. They won their A-League spot back by a mile in the end.

Hop Skip Jump – Kangaroos   7-0

After disappointing results in their first 2 games, Hop Skip Jump were desperate not to finish last and they blew Kangaroos off the park with 4 players scoring and Barreto securing a hat-trick. They scored so heavily that they turned round a -5 goal difference into +2, I’ve a feeling they’ll be back again next season.

It all came down to a 3rd round knockout game between Crimson Eagles and Arrested Developers. Crimson Eagles entered with the goal difference advantage, knowing a draw would be enough to return to the A-League following a long period of inactivity.

The game itself was a tight dour affair, as both teams scored early and neither team look likely of taking the 3 points. If any team should have won the Crimson Eagles just shaded the possession and shots. So their promotion is well deserved. The Rockstars took 3rd from Brisbane Roar who again made the playoffs, but neither side were in the running.

Again it came down to the 3rd round as Dunder Mifflin and Skoolage took the field of play. Both teams were locked on the same goal difference, but Dunder Mifflin held a 3 point lead. Skoolage would have to win to progress.

In a hard fought contest Skoolage lead twice, only for Dunder Mifflin to cancel out their advantage on both occasions. Before in the 71st minute Reeder gave Dunder Mifflin their first lead of the match and they clung on to it with some late subs to retain their place in the A-League.

White City Eagles could have still made it through, but it would have required Dunder Mifflin to lose and a big win by 7-8 goals against Mirool. They won by 4 but in the end it counted for nothing due to the other result.
