A-League Season 70 Preview

A-League Preview- Season 70

The A-League action begins again on Tuesday with four new teams promoted to fight for top league honours. Last season’s winner Crimson Eagles will be hoping to go back to back but it may not be that easy. Below I’ve previewed each side and had a guess where I think they will likely finish. I’ve also got a few predictions from some of the top managers and where they think everyone might end up.

Abbotsford FC

– The most consistent performer in the A-League over the last 10 seasons again showing this with a 4th place finish last season.

– Abbotsford hasn’t acquired any new players for the season but with last season’s starting X1 average age of only 26.45, his team will likely be just as good as last season
Prediction: 3rd
Bes Mudi Bandits

– Bes Mudi Bandits are back in the A-League, having won Division 1.1 last season. After their recent hiatus from the top division, they will be looking to lock down a permanent position in the top flight.
– They’ve made no notable transfers and may struggle a little to compete with the top teams but wouldn’t be shocked if they pulled off some surprises.

Prediction: 6th

Bindi FC

– Since going the A-League a few seasons ago, Bindi looked at home amongst the company of Australia’s elite.

– Finishing a strong 5th last season and making one addition to the starting line up in the off season, I’m sure they will be highly competitive once more.
Prediction: 4thChelsea Dream

– Chelsea Dream fought hard in a relegation play-off to remain in the top league this season.

– They sold two ageing players and replaced them with younger options.

– It will be hard to see Chelsea Dream finishing higher than their 9th place finish last season.

Prediction: 11th

Collingwood

– Collingwood won Division 1.3 convincingly last season. They have a solid squad on paper but I’m unsure of their quality or how they will fair against the countries best.

– They haven’t made any additions to their squad but only losing two matches last season they clearly have class, but it’s unknown if that will translate to victories in the top league.

Prediction: 9th

Crimson Eagles FC

– Last season’s winner Crimson will be looking to go back to back after tasting victory again after a long absence.

– Crimson has sold two starters, 9.6 million worth of talent but is yet to fill that void.

– Expecting Crimson to be highly competitive again and wouldn’t be surprised if they went back to back.

Prediction: 2nd

Flying Hellfish

– Flying Hellfish was unlucky last season finishing in 3rd but did taste success in the Nation Cup.
– Arguably has the best starting team in the A-League and will be hard to hold out this year, especially after making a few key transfers in the back end of last season.

Prediction: 1st
Glasston– Glasston has been a solid competitor for seasons now in the top flight finishing a solid 6th last time out.

– They’ve made one key addition in the off-season but has an ageing squad and I expect this consistent performer to possibly struggle a little this season

Prediction: 7th

Harry Cool

– Harry Cool won Division 1.2 last season only losing one game on the way up.
– They’ve made one key addition to the squad in the off-season but are a big unknown talent.

– Harry Cool might find the step up in class a little too much but I’m happy to be proven wrong.

Prediction: 10th

Jimmy Pizza

– Jimmy had absolutely no luck last season with easily the best squad last time around.

– They finished the season 2nd and also finished runner up in the National Cup.
– Jimmy Pizza had an off-season rage sale and sacked his entire squad.
– He’s made a heap of transfers but is looking at a younger market to build a squad around.

– Depends how he spends his war chest of funds will determine what he achieves this season.

Prediction: 5th

SYDclub

– SYDub sold three of his starters with no editions to the team sheet yet.
– His squat is quite a young squad with an array of older guys. I think it might be a challenge for SYDclub to stay up this season.

Prediction: 12th

The Obscurials

– Finished 2nd last season. In Division 1.1 and went up in promotions.
– Made a few upgrades to replace previous starters in the offseason.
– Young squad all under 24 except 2 players
– Highly successful u23 campaign last season winning two U23 Official Cups but will find it difficult to compete with the top teams especially looking to camp a few starters throughout the season.

– Middle/Lower end of the table finish at best
Prediction: 8th

A-League Season 69 — End of season review

A-League- Season 69 Rounds 18-22
Round 18:
This round was set to be season-defining for the top teams but didn’t quite live up to it those predictions. The top 3 teams all had draws keeping the top of the table looking the same in the chase for glory. The league was well and truly still in the balance at this stage.

Round 18 – 10-03-2019 09:30

Bindi FC 2 – 8 Brisbane Roar
Ayreon 2 – 3 SYDclub
Flying Hellfish 3 – 3 Glasston
Abbotsford FC 5 – 0 Chelsea Dream
Crimson Eagles FC 0 – 0 Jimmy Pizza
Close family 4 – 0 Welford

Round 19:
A huge 3-0 upset from relegation positioned team Close Family over titles favourites Jimmy Pizza really threw their title defence into disarray. This played directly into Crimson Eagles hands edging them closer to a second A-League title with the title now in their sights.

Round 19 – 13-03-2019 13:30

SYDclub 1 – 8 Flying Hellfish
Glasston 2 – 3 Abbotsford FC
Chelsea Dream 1 – 4 Crimson Eagles FC
Jimmy Pizza 0 – 3 Close family
Welford 0 – 2 Bindi FC
Brisbane Roar 2 – 4 Ayreon
Round 20:
Jimmy Pizza’s side was again disappointing, having only managed a draw with Bindi FC. Flying Hellfish took all three point from his game reminding Crimson Eagles he will be there to take advantage of any slip up’s. Crimson Eagles were on their A-game though easily disposing of Chelsea Dream 4-1. Without a huge surprise or two, it was looking likely Crimson was going to be taking home the title.

Ayreon 4 – 1 Welford
Bindi FC 1 – 1 Jimmy Pizza
Close family 1 – 3 Chelsea Dream
Crimson Eagles FC 5 – 0 Glasston
Abbotsford FC 3 – 0 SYDclub
Flying Hellfish 3 – 2 Brisbane Roar
Round 21:
Jimmy Pizza finally got back into winning ways but it was all too late with Crimson again securing victory. The title was wrapped up with the last round being insignificant on the top teams. The bottom few teams still had a lot to play for with SYDclub and Brisbane Roar still looking to secure their place in the top flight.

Round 21 – 20-03-2019 15:00

Welford 2 – 9 Flying Hellfish
Brisbane Roar 1 – 3 Abbotsford FC
SYDclub 0 – 6 Crimson Eagles FC
Glasston 4 – 2 Close family
Chelsea Dream 3 – 6 Bindi FC
Jimmy Pizza 7 – 0 Ayreon
Round 22:
Jimmy Pizza had a win over rivals Hellfish to get one back for the National Cup and to finish in 2nd place with Hellfish 3rd respectively. Abbotsford FC again were again a model of consistency finishing in 4th. Bindi FC and Glasston both had solid season finishing the season in 5th and 6th. SYDclub managed to hang on to 7th position securing another season in the A-League. Brisbane Roar finished 8th and Chelsea Dream 9th both now having to fight it out in the Play-OffPromotions to play A-League football next season. Close Family, Ayreon and Welford finished 10th, 11th and 12th all will need to fight their way back up through division 1 next season all being directly relegated.

Crimson Eagles FC took home the A-League title having only lost one match all season. They were the most consistent team all season scoring a whopping 25 more goals than closest rivals with the leagues second best defence. Congratulations Crimson Eagles FC on their second A-League title after a 38 season drought!

Round 22 – 24-03-2019 10:45

Flying Hellfish 0 – 1 Jimmy Pizza
Abbotsford FC 5 – 1 Welford
Crimson Eagles FC 8 – 2 Brisbane Roar
Close family 2 – 3 SYDclub
Bindi FC 3 – 2 Glasston
Ayreon 1 – 2 Chelsea Dream

The A-League in reflection — The last 10 seasons (S59-68)

I went on a statistic compiling mission this week, looking back at the last ten seasons of our Top League. Over the last ten seasons there have only been six winners of the coveted trophy. Surprisingly, only 30 different teams have contested the A-League during this ten season period. There has been a few stand out performers during this period and the tables below highlight this. I hope the statistics make as interesting reading as they did compiling but don’t take you a long to read.

A-League Team of the Last Ten Seasons:  (**Stats from the last 8 season**)
– Jimmy Pizza
During the last ten seasons, Jimmy Pizza has won the A-League a whopping 4 times! Having topped all statistical charts during this period. It’s undeniable Pizza, has been the main force to be reckoned with during this time. His team’s ability to create bulk chances, having created on average over the last 10 season 22.6 shots per match and averaging 4.01 goals a game is quite incredible. During this period he has only conceded on average 10.08 shots per match against, less than half of what they create. Jimmy Pizza is the undisputed best side of the A-League in the last ten seasons.

A notable mention to Abbotsford FC being the model of consistency in the period, being the only team to play in the top flight for all ten seasons! A great achievement and has probably been unlucky over this period to not have more success.

A-League Season 69 — Rounds 13-17 in Review

A-League- Season 69 Rounds 13-17

Round 13 – 20-02-2019 11:30

Jimmy Pizza 6 – 0 Welford
Brisbane Roar 0 – 3 Glasston
Chelsea Dream 3 – 1 SYDclub
Flying Hellfish 1 – 0 Abbotsford FC
Crimson Eagles FC 1 – 1 Bindi FC
Ayreon 2 – 0 Close family
Round 13 saw Crimson only managing a draw. This set back may hurt Crimson on his search for a second title, 38 seasons after his first. The other two front runners both had wins and also saw Ayreon pick up three valuable points on his late push to survive relegation. Chelsea also had a great win over SYDclub gaining three more, much needed points.

Round 14 – 24-02-2019 14:30

Glasston 1 – 2 Jimmy Pizza
SYDclub 3 – 1 Brisbane Roar
Welford 4 – 3 Chelsea Dream
Bindi FC 1 – 4 Flying Hellfish
Close family 2 – 7 Crimson Eagles FC
Abbotsford FC 5 – 0 Ayreon

Round 14 action kicked off with another win for Jimmy Pizza, maintaining his credentials as the heavy favorite . Hellfish and Crimson both had convincing wins keeping them in the top three and right in the mix for the title. No massive upsets to report and most games went according to script.

Round 15 – 27-02-2019 09:15

Glasston 4 – 1 Welford
Jimmy Pizza 5 – 0 SYDclub
Brisbane Roar 6 – 0 Chelsea Dream
Bindi FC 3 – 2 Abbotsford FC
Flying Hellfish 0 – 0 Close family
Crimson Eagles FC 6 – 1 Ayreon

Round 15 went by with both Pizza and Crimson taking maximum points from their matches. Unfortunately Hellfish could only manage a draw in his match with relegation zone team, Close Family. This result opened up a gap of five points between himself in third and Pizza at the top. Hellfish may find it really hard to make this up with only seven rounds remaining. At this stage, the league really started to show the gap between the top 3, 4th-8th and the bottom few teams on the ladder.

Round 16 – 03-03-2019 17:45

Welford 1 – 3 Brisbane Roar
SYDclub 3 – 4 Glasston
Chelsea Dream 0 – 6 Jimmy Pizza
Abbotsford FC 3 – 4 Crimson Eagles FC
Close family 1 – 1 Bindi FC
Ayreon 1 – 2 Flying Hellfish
Round 16 had no upsets of note and the three title contenders all picked up maximum points. The battle for survival at the bottom of the league is becoming just as exciting as the top with a clear bottom four emerged.

Round 17 – 06-03-2019 11:30

Jimmy Pizza 3 – 1 Abbotsford FC
Welford 0 – 9 Crimson Eagles FC
Brisbane Roar 3 – 0 Close family
SYDclub 2 – 0 Bindi FC
Glasston 3 – 2 Ayreon
Chelsea Dream 2 – 4 Flying Hellfish

Round 17 saw the three big guns all have a win making every game from now important to secure maximum points but if they wish to overturn the current ladder positions. After 17 rounds Jimmy Pizza is only two points above Crimson at the top of the table. Flying Hellfish is a further three points behind Crimson. Fourth to eighth is very close with only seven points separating these teams. The bottom four looks to be decided already but the three teams automatically getting relegated and the one side who will have to fight out the Play-offs isn’t yet clear. The round 18 fixture involving Crimson Eagles and Jimmy Pizza may turn out to season defining.

A-League Season 69 — First 12 Rounds in Review

Another A-League Season kicked off at the start of January. We saw four newly promoted teams from division one join the top flight to contest for the coveted A-League trophy, with four of our sides from the previous A-League season being sent back to division one to have to earn a place in the top flight again.
At the start of the season looking at sides in contention for the title, I could then narrow it down to what I thought, a three horse race. Respectively, the depth of the other sides in the A-League isn’t there to give the League a red hot crack this season without a minor miracle happening (or a sell-off). These three sides also occupied the top three positions the season just gone and in my mind were most likely to finish in these positions again. The reigning champion of the last two seasons and five-time winner Jimmy Pizza on paper went into the season a clear favourite for a third consecutive title. Second favourite and happy to be labelled the underdog at the season’s start was Flying Hellfish. Hellfish finished second last campaign narrowly, after a rebuild the season before and has seemed to have found more consistency. Third favourite and dark-horse for the title are Crimson Eagles FC. His squad is very solid on paper and quite versatile allowing him to be able to play multiple different tactics effectively which could be the difference in a tightly contested battle up top of the table.

Round 1

  • This saw Jimmy Pizza stamp his claim on the title by defeating Helllfish which could be very valuable points later in the season.

Round 2

  • All title contenders had wins and every team after 2 rounds had points to their name
Round 3
  • The big surprise of this round was Jimmy losing to Bindi FC 3-0
Round 4
  • Round 4 was a very closely matched round with no team winning by more than one goal.
  • Crazily, Glasston had managed to draw all four games to start the season
Round 5
  • Hellfish dropped points to Glasston (5 draws in a row for Glasston)
  • Crimson pulled off a big upset beating Jimmy 4-1
Round 6
  • All title favourites had wins
  • Glasston also had their first win, starting the season 6 games 1 win and 5 draws. Up until then, they were in danger of being the first side to go through the season undefeated and end up in relegation.
Round 7
  • Jimmy and Hellfish both had wins but fellow title contender Crimson was defeated by Abbotsford FC

Round 8

  • No major upsets or anomalies, the season and positions on the ladder were starting to solidify at this time.
Round 9
  •  Again, no real upsets but a clear bottom 3 teams started to emerge

Round 10

  • Hellfish dropped points to Abbotsford FC who started putting a nice run of form together
  • Crimson had a huge 9-0 win over Bindi FC which came as a surprise

Round 11

  • Brisbane Roar upset title favourite, Jimmy Pizza 1-0
  • Crimson beat Flying Hellfish convincingly 5-1 escalating him into first place with both closest rivals losing.
  • Close Family had a much-needed win to help ease some of the relegation pressure but needs to find more results fast.
Round 12
  • Astonishingly, in the return fixture, three teams reversed the result of the previous round. These were Jimmy beating Brisbane, SYDclub defeating Welford and Abbotsford turning around their result against Close Family.
  • Meanwhile Hellfish and Crimson had a draw

After 12 rounds and just past the mid part of the season the below table shows the current standings. Surprisingly, I’m sure a lot of managers, Crimson Eagles FC sit on top of the ladder but have title favourites Jimmy Pizza breathing down their neck, only being behind by goal difference. While Flying Hellfish sit in striking distance waiting for any Steve G moments, only a win away in third place.

In fourth, Bindi FC have had a great season so far beating a few of the big boys and having fairly consistent results. Abbotsford FC have done a great job of late after not being able to buy a win early in the campaign. Sixth place the ever consistent SYDclub, a seasoned veteran of the A-League is doing enough to maintain status. Glasston sitting in seventh place have had a tough season drawing the first five games which is now paying hurt to their points tally.

In the relegation play-off position, Brisbane Roar are only two points behind seventh place and with a few more wins can find safety. Ninth position is currently Chelsea Dream who have now lost their last four matches in a row. A few better performances are definitely needed to avoid relegation.

In the relegation places; we have Welford, Close Family and Ayreon. All three teams I feel will need to find something towards the back of the season to be playing A-League football next season but this might just be a task too far out of reach.

After 12 years, numerous rage quits and comebacks The Smoking Tree have finally lifted their first A-League Trophy. In a response to a message from Theme Dreamer, Aarons replied

“HAHA thankz man n it makes every rage quit comeback worthwhile”

The odyssey has been long and the rewards will continue for as long as he keeps the team together, which he has indicated will be about 2 seasons, before he sells up to do it all again.

A stellar second half of the season saw Abbotsford climb into second place. All the mid-season challengers such as the {Draxonia} Crimson Eagles, SYD Club and City Water Motel either sold off their elder statesman as City Water did, or just fell away as the season progressed.

Shrewsbury shrugged off a lethargic start, to finish strongly into 5th place. Below them Senior National Cup winners FC Ailsa were the best of the promoted teams with a solid mid table finish. After selling their best players City Water were lucky to hold on to the last spot of safety. Results for Hop Skip Jump and Crystal Phallus were patchy leaving them to run the Gauntlet of the Playoffs. The bottom 3 were going back to Division 1 long before the season finished.

Round Commentary

Round 12
Let’s do it all again

City Water Motel 10-0 Brisbane Roar
Myrtou FC 0-18 Hop Skip Jump
SYDclub 1-3 The Smoking Tree
Crystal Phallus FC 1-3 Abbotsford FC
Hellas FC 0-9 F.C.Ailsa
Shrewsbury Biscuits FC 3-2 《Draxonia》Crimson Eagles

scruttino
The Smoking Tree go 2 for 2 over SYD to see off one of their rivals for the title. Shrewsbury win at home over the Crimson Eagles to leave City Water as the main title challenger

Round 13
No real Blockbuster games. Abbotsford-Crimson Eagles and Crystal Phallus-FC Ailsa should be the most competitive matches

City Water Motel 3-0 Hop Skip Jump
Brisbane Roar 2-5 The Smoking Tree
SYDclub 12-0 Myrtou FC
Crystal Phallus FC 1-0 F.C.Ailsa
Abbotsford FC 1-3 《Draxonia》Crimson Eagles
Shrewsbury Biscuits FC 7-0 Hellas FC

scruttino
Steady as she goes in Round 13

Round 14
The Smoking Tree can really put some distant between themselves and the rest with a win over City Water. From the looks of things there could be a surprise or two this round, it just has that feeling.

The Smoking Tree 4-2 City Water Motel
Myrtou FC 0-14 Brisbane Roar
Hop Skip Jump 2-2 SYDclub
《Draxonia》Crimson Eagles 3-1 Crystal Phallus FC
Hellas FC 0-5 Abbotsford FC
F.C.Ailsa 0-3 Shrewsbury Biscuits FC

scruttino
It’s the Smoking Trees title to lose from here. Crimson Eagles were lucky win against the Phallus.

scruttino
With Carrol, Kilmister and Shorten on the market City Water have given up on the title race. It’s now up to the Crimson Eagles or SYD will have to mount a challenge or the title is gone.

Round 15
We shouldn’t see to many changes up the top unless FC Ailsa can upset the Crimson Eagles. The most competitive game should be Abbotsford-Shrewsbury, both sides are level on points and equally matched.

The Smoking Tree 0-2 Hop Skip Jump
City Water Motel 7-0 Myrtou FC
Brisbane Roar 1-5 SYDclub
《Draxonia》Crimson Eagles 1-3 F.C.Ailsa
Crystal Phallus FC 3-1 Hellas FC
Abbotsford FC 2-1 Shrewsbury Biscuits FC

scruttino
The Eagles and Smoking Tree lose. The Biscuits mid table season continues.

Round 16
Busy me writing essays for Uni has me forgetting to do this again.

SYD climb back into the top 3 with a victory over City Water after the sale of their Midfield. Abbotsford called FC Ailsa’s bluff with a one sided tactic. While Shrewsbury took a close win over Crystal Phallus.

Hop Skip Jump 2-0 Brisbane Roar
Myrtou FC 0-12 The Smoking Tree
SYDclub 1-0 City Water Motel
F.C.Ailsa 1-4 Abbotsford FC
Hellas FC 0-8 《Draxonia》Crimson Eagles
Shrewsbury Biscuits FC 4-3 Crystal Phallus FC

damo11
I’m begging for a win

Round 17
Can Shrewsbury, Crystal Phallus and FC Ailsa throw a spanner in the cogs of their opponents? The Tree have a 4-point lead with 5 games to play, City Water have given up the chase so only the Crimson Eagles and SYD can stop them now.

City Water Motel 0-9 F.C.Ailsa
Hop Skip Jump 1-2 Abbotsford FC
Brisbane Roar 2-1 Hellas FC
Myrtou FC 0-19 《Draxonia》Crimson Eagles
The Smoking Tree 3-2 Shrewsbury Biscuits FC
SYDclub 0-0 Crystal Phallus FC

damo11
No

scruttino
Well you’re safe from the automatic relegation zone and that draw rules SYD out of the title race.

Round 18
FC Ailsa could put the final nail in SYD’s title chances. While the Phallus will be hoping the get out of the relegation zone against the Smoking Tree and keep the title alive.

《Draxonia》Crimson Eagles 3-0 Brisbane Roar
Shrewsbury Biscuits FC 21-0 Myrtou FC
Crystal Phallus FC 1-2 The Smoking Tree
F.C.Ailsa 3-0 SYDclub
Abbotsford FC 8-1 City Water Motel
Hellas FC 1-5 Hop Skip Jump

scruttino
the final nine inch nail was driven through SYD’s title hopes. The Eagles now have to win everything and hope against hope

Round 19
Unless we see an upset nothing will change at the top. SYD-Abbotsford looks the match of the round.

Myrtou FC 0-11 Crystal Phallus FC
The Smoking Tree 3-1 F.C.Ailsa
SYDclub 0-2 Abbotsford FC
City Water Motel 1-3 Hellas FC
Hop Skip Jump 0-0 《Draxonia》Crimson Eagles
Brisbane Roar 2-3 Shrewsbury Biscuits FC

scruttino
Both the Crimson Eagles-Hop Skip Jump and Smoking Tree-FC Ailsa were good game, but results went the way of the Tree allowing them to secure the title in the next round.

Round 20
Even if Abbotsford manage a win over the Smoking Tree it’s only prolonging the inevitable as they have Hellas in round 21.

Attention now turns to the minor placings.

Shrewsbury Biscuits FC 3-2 Hop Skip Jump
《Draxonia》Crimson Eagles 8-0 City Water Motel
Hellas FC 3-6 SYDclub
Abbotsford FC 2-1 The Smoking Tree
F.C.Ailsa 14-0 Myrtou FC
Crystal Phallus FC 6-2 Brisbane Roar

damo11
And me trying to avoid relegation.

scruttino
Abbotsford delay the party for one more round and give themselves a chance of a top 3 finish. But unless the sim really plays up I can’t see Hellas beating the Smoking Tree.

coconut_wolf_bandit
damo if you do your duty in beating Hop Skip and City lose to Shrewsbury, it’s gonna be a last round death fight to avoid playoffs

damo11
yeah, well that didn’t happen

Round 21
On paper this should be the round the Smoking Tree lift the title, nothing less than a simming or a double send-off will stop it from happening. But good on them, they deserve it.

Down the bottom half results could mean that City Water and Crystal Phallus will playoff for the last spot of safety in the last round.

Hop Skip Jump 4-1 Crystal Phallus FC
Brisbane Roar 2-1 F.C.Ailsa
Myrtou FC 0-15 Abbotsford FC
The Smoking Tree 13-0 Hellas FC
SYDclub 3-1 《Draxonia》Crimson Eagles
City Water Motel 2-4 Shrewsbury Biscuits FC

scruttino
Congrats to Aaron on securing the A-League title. The rebuild has taken awhile, but they’ll be top contenders for at least the next year if he doesn’t sell up during that time.

Down the bottom the playoff teams have been decided. We knew who would be relegated for quite a while. The top 7 know they are safe, with just the order of the finish to work out. Crimson Eagles could far from 2nd to 4th if they lose in the round 22 and other results go against them.

brucehuang
I beat Alisa which I did not imagine

aarons
CheeerZZz big earZ. YEHAA man Im finally the greatest. Ya ive got this squad for another 2 seasonZ then its a sell off and try a farkin again

Round 22

A strange last round greeting. I’ll be supervising the scoreboard bar at tomorrow’s reclink community cup at elsternwick oval tomorrow. Any melbournian’s are welcome to come down and say hi. Otherwise have a good round of MZ football

Crystal Phallus FC 4-0 City Water Motel
F.C.Ailsa 1-2 Hop Skip Jump
Abbotsford FC 4-1 Brisbane Roar
Hellas FC 17-0 Myrtou FC
《Draxonia》Crimson Eagles 3-4 The Smoking Tree
Shrewsbury Biscuits FC 1-2 SYDclub

scruttino
I was busy, but the day was good. The bar did around $10,000 for the day.

scruttino
Well that’s the season, The Smoking Tree extended out their points margin to win comfortably. I’ve some stats to crunch to figure out who won the awards which will appear in the end of season zone. But that was a good season.

damo11
Bit of a shocker for me on my return to the big league.

It was a non-contest in the end as Giorgios Sakelariou won with a record margin of 15 points. This would have been less had City Water not sold both Adam Carroll and Ian Kilmister with 7 games to play in the season. Bundy’s Boot winner Alvaro Saldanha from FC Ailsa finished 4th in his first A-League season, scoring a lot of goals against weaker teams, yet struggling to replicate those feats against teams around or better than them.

It took them some time, but The Smoking Tree ascended to the top with an unbeaten record by the half way mark of the season. Retirements and some unfortunate results have last seasons’ champions Shrewsbury mired in the bottom half.

It’s a race in 4 at the top, with The Smoking Tree currently lead by 2 points from {Draxonia} Crimson Eagles, City Water and SYD. FC Ailsa have been the most impressive promotion team to occupy the mid table with Abbotsford and Crystal Phallus. Hop Skip Jump are 3rd on least goals conceded, but have struggle to get points out of their matches leaving them at the back of the mid table log jam.

Myrtou have sold up and no one thought Brisbane Roar or Hellas would pose much threat, which has turned out to be true.

Round Commentary

Round 1
Here we go again. Good luck to teams new and old

City Water Motel 3-0 Crystal Phallus FC
Hop Skip Jump 0-1 F.C.Ailsa
Brisbane Roar 0-3 Abbotsford FC
Myrtou FC 1-11 Hellas FC
The Smoking Tree 3-3 《Draxonia》Crimson Eagles

yeehaaa a draw. man that’s much better than a pole being driven up my a@Zhole

Round 2
Toufffffff… took advantage of Myrtou selling up to score big and lead the league. It won’t last as they face The Smoking Tree, but take a picture and put it on the mantelpiece.

Crimson Eagles-SYD looks the match of the round. For all the new teams the Hellas-Smoking Tree game will give them a guide to their chances in the A-League.

Crystal Phallus FC 2-2 Hop Skip Jump
F.C.Ailsa 7-1 Brisbane Roar
Abbotsford FC 17-0 Myrtou FC
Hellas FC 0-4 The Smoking Tree
《Draxonia》Crimson Eagles 6-2 SYDclub
Shrewsbury Biscuits FC 0-3 City Water Motel

damo11
Esteve Pacorro scored on debut, only a day after arriving at the Phallus 🙂

coconut_wolf_bandit
Ailsa dominate fellow promotees Brisbane Roar 7-1… probably the only team that will do well out of the newly promoted imo.

scruttino
Apart from Myrtou, it looks like most team could beat another on their day. Hellas put up a good fight against The Smoking Tree. Ailsa look the best of the promoted teams

Round 3
Promotion side FC Ailsa could be leading the League by the end of the round. With The Smoking Tree favourites against Abbotsford, City Water-Crimson Eagles an each way bet, Ailsa should put at least 15 past Myrtou landing them the top spot. My predictions can be the kiss of death, but they won’t lose this one that’s for sure.

Meanwhile it’s been a slow start to the season for reigning champions Shrewsbury. Which after losing their last 4 games last season, has picking up 1 point of a possible 18 in their past 6 league games.

Hop Skip Jump 1-2 Shrewsbury Biscuits FC
City Water Motel 4-1 《Draxonia》Crimson Eagles
SYDclub 6-0 Hellas FC
The Smoking Tree 1-1 Abbotsford FC
Myrtou FC 0-14 F.C.Ailsa
Brisbane Roar 0-5 Crystal Phallus FC

Round 4
FC Ailsa will have their first real A-League test in The Smoking Tree. I’ll leave the result open to all forms of possibility. But after struggling for all last season City Water could be leading once more, to make 4 different leaders after 4 rounds.

Shrewsbury finally registered their first league win in 7 games against Hop Skip Jump, but it wasn’t as formality. So their era off a top 3 finish could be momentarily over.

Crystal Phallus FC 14-0 Myrtou FC
F.C.Ailsa 0-1 The Smoking Tree
Abbotsford FC 0-1 SYDclub
Hellas FC 1-5 City Water Motel
《Draxonia》Crimson Eagles 3-0 Hop Skip Jump
Shrewsbury Biscuits FC 1-1 Brisbane Roar

scruttino
Shrewsbury’s season has failed to launch. If they don’t start soon it will be a long way back. Abbotsford can feel equally hard done by. Hellas and Brisbane Roar are bound for the bottom 3 with Myrtou. As Hop Skip Jump were better than the scoreline suggests against the Crimson Eagles.

Round 5
There will be some blowout games this round unless the promotion teams can pull out an upset. Ailsa will want a good showing against SYD.

Abbotsford-City Water is the match of the round up the top. While Hop Skip Jump will not want to lose points to Hellas

Brisbane Roar 0-8 《Draxonia》Crimson Eagles
Myrtou FC 0-20 Shrewsbury Biscuits FC
The Smoking Tree 2-0 Crystal Phallus FC
SYDclub 6-0 F.C.Ailsa

Yeah, after a disappointing season City Water are looking good again.

Round 6
We have a big game between The Smoking Tree and Shrewsbury. First and second last season. Then a bunch of intriguing match ups that will shine a light on the how the midfield will begin to take shape.

F.C.Ailsa 1-0 City Water Motel
Abbotsford FC 0-7 Hop Skip Jump
Hellas FC 0-3 Brisbane Roar

That’s a cruel result if ever I’ve seen one. Equally surprising was Hop Skip Jump demolishing Abbotsford. While Shrewsbury and The Smoking Tree played out a classic that could have gone either way, as it finished The tree got some valuable away points.

Round 7
This round looks quite uneven on paper, expect some teams to win big and boost their goal difference. City Water-SYD looks the match of the round for a competitive stoush.

Brisbane Roar 0-3 Hop Skip Jump
The Smoking Tree 13-0 Myrtou FC
City Water Motel 3-5 SYDclub
Abbotsford FC 1-1 F.C.Ailsa
《Draxonia》Crimson Eagles 4-1 Hellas FC
Crystal Phallus FC 3-2 Shrewsbury Biscuits FC

scruttino
Things are not going well for Shrewsbury, with The Smoking Tree climbing to first. We can lock in the bottom three teams to be relegated, their performances have not been up to A-League standard, though Hellas are performing the best of the threee.

Round 8
Expect The Smoking Tree to stay on top. Shrewsbury should beat Abbotsford and Crimson Eagles will want a win to keep the pressure on the league leaders.

Hop Skip Jump 0-2 The Smoking Tree
Myrtou FC 1-17 City Water Motel
SYDclub 4-1 Brisbane Roar
F.C.Ailsa 0-3 《Draxonia》Crimson Eagles
Hellas FC 3-7 Crystal Phallus FC

Round 9
City Water have the scoring form; The Smoking Tree are better defensively. It’ll be close this one. Aaron has predicted a 5-2 loss for his team.

Hellas FC have been performing better than their points tally suggests, so Abbotsford will not want to slip up.

City Water Motel 2-2 The Smoking Tree
Brisbane Roar 16-0 Myrtou FC
SYDclub 1-0 Hop Skip Jump
Crystal Phallus FC 0-7 《Draxonia》Crimson Eagles

scruttino
That’s the way it goes sometimes. FC Ailsa upset Shrewsbury to leave them mired in mid table. The SYD-Hop Skip Jump match was a cracker, SYD just edged it.

Round 10
I was busy writing an essay yesterday and forgot to write this blurb

Hop Skip Jump 1-2 City Water Motel
The Smoking Tree 6-0 Brisbane Roar
Myrtou FC 0-11 SYDclub
F.C.Ailsa 0-2 Crystal Phallus FC

Round 11
It’s a blockbuster between SYD and The Smoking Tree for top spot at the turn.

Then we also have Crimson Eagles-Shrewsbury and Abbotsford-Crystal Phallus, both will be good games.

Brisbane Roar 0-6 City Water Motel
Hop Skip Jump 15-0 Myrtou FC
The Smoking Tree 3-2 SYDclub
Abbotsford FC 1-0 Crystal Phallus FC
F.C.Ailsa 6-0 Hellas FC

It was close but The Smoking Tree just edged it to reclaim to spot, the return fixture will be just as exciting, in a similar fashion Abbotsford scrapped past Crystal Phallus. While Shrewsbury just don’t have the legs this season, Crimson Eagles back into 2nd.

Last season winner Giorgios Sakelariou from The Smoking Tree leads the way again as a less competitive league has strikers amassing more goals and MVP points as a result.

Another season goes by and the revolving door swings 5 new teams back into the A-League. None of them are completely new as Duffield, Glasston, Rodborough, Telita and Bondi Icebergs have all been here before.

It will be difficult to stop The Smoking Tree from securing a 2nd title in a row as they have the stand out team. The season will be more competitive than the last one, as there are no complete bunnies, but there will be teams that find themselves mired in the bottom half with little chance of getting out. I’m not sure who that will be, but from history we can assume that at least 3 of the 5 promoted teams will be relegated. One will perform well and achieve mid-table safety while another will hover around the relegation playoff zone and most likely end up in it.

Despite Aarons predicting a 3rd place finish for his side, my personal feeling is that everyone else are playing for second place, but the competition for second place and mid-table safety will be fierce, with results for some going against them for little reason.

Words from the Managers

There was an interesting discussion in the A-League messageboard about the new season as some old managers have come back and resumed rivals that have been absent in recent season. The language got a bit fruity but it’s all in good fun, so with some minor alterations I’ve kept most in place.

aarons
man I replaced my greek international with a useless sack of shit n paid 5.5+ mil for the pleasure. I hate bidding wars, but in saying all that, the useless sack of shit should put 35 past ol’ man grinner n 25 past ol’ man rookerman n 15 past the icebergs which will feel like another winning season. Man I feel all hot n sweaty just thinking about that. Sizey top 3.

aarons
**** I wuz in denial, it was 6.1 million

scruttino
Aarons falls for the ol’ bidding war rope’a’dope. I was dragged into one for my best defender as a 19 year old, I paid about 11.5 million. Similar players can be bought for 6 million or so on the lower end of the scale. Still he’s an awesome defender.

aarons
rope’a’dope mmmmm soundZ like my type of thing, my dude was unmaxed 9 PI. Perhaps he won’t be so useless when the 10th ball arrives

troyh65
I’m hoping to be above the play off line. The team is still reasonably young, about two seasons away from being at its best, so it is in the hands of the Mz gods. As for Aarons, he’d be lucky to beat time with a drum, when I beat him I will savour the moment, then remind him of how rubbish he is.

rookerman
The tragic gibberer is still here I see.

grinner
You all are. I would suggest for the article and huge piece on amazing return of Duffield United to the top fold, how their preparations have included clearing more space in the Trophy cabinet and buying some lube so you fellas don’t get so butthurt and how like death ‘n’ taxes, Duffield lifting the trophy again is inevitable. Hoping to break the cycle and win before season 69 which is the season I’m due, but given the piss poor state of you blokes teams, I suspect it will be sooner.

A-League 57 Round 12-22 – End of Season Review

Disclaimer – There are a few Aaron Size outburst scatter through the report, I’ve left them in as he’s a harmless guy, expressing outrage at the sim in his own personal way.

The less one says about the last four rounds from Shrewsbury the better, they entered cruise mode once the title was secured and while deserving the title for their work in the first 18 rounds, the achievement is somewhat tarnished by the finish. But hey, they won the title. Despite not scoring as many goal as Aaron would have liked, The Smoking Trees return to the A-League was a resounding success, conceding the least goals of any side and climbing all the way to 2nd.

Myrtou secured 3rd despite selling up as the Crimson Eagles, SYD and Abbotsford all lost in the final round. Crimson Eagles had a disastrous run home losing 5 of their last 6 games, killing off any hope they had of winning the league. While they watched lower league sides City Water and Hop Skip Jump roll teams regardless of their favouritism before the matches began.

Glasston would have earned a playoff berth had the Red Devils not won, and given themselves a chance to save their spot in the A-League through the playoffs gauntlet. Telita had given themselves a chance of a playoff spot through good results in round 19 and 20, but losses in the last two meant demotion was direct. Rodborough had looked good for the spoon a long way out from the finish.

Round Commentary

Round 12

Same as last round. Will Eric run a different tactic? Given he was comprehensibly outplayed in the first leg of the turn round smart money would be yes he will. Can the Red Devils upset the The Smoking Tree again? Unlikely, but it would make for another sizeeeeeeeeeey outburst at the inadequacies of the sim.

City Water Motel 1-2 Hop Skip Jump
Myrtou FC 2-5 Telita
The Smoking Tree 2-2 Red Devils United
SYDclub 1-1 Abbotsford FC
Rodborough 0-2 Glasston
Shrewsbury Biscuits FC 4-1 《Draxonia》Crimson Eagles

scruttino
I’m not sure what to say at those results. Bad tactics resulted in Myrtou losing. Telita, Hop Skip Jump and Shrewsbury got their revenge. The Red Devils got another results against the odds. SYD and Abbotsford played out a draw, while Glasston had a comfortable win without putting the foot down.

In many ways we are back where we were after round 10. We’ve got our top 2 in Crimson Eagles and Shrewsbury, then a large bunch from 3rd to 8th, before the bottom four combining disappointing results with upset victories.

aarons
farrrkkkkkkk fk fk man how many timeZ does this fkn game wanna a@Z rape me I need a bong or ten to calm fkn down.

Round 13

Match of the round is The Smoking Tree-Myrtou, Abbotsford could upset Crimson Eagles but the Eagles start as favourites. Glasston-SYD could be a playoff decided

City Water Motel 5-0 Telita
Hop Skip Jump 2-3 Red Devils United
The Smoking Tree 1-1 Myrtou FC
SYDclub 2-0 Glasston
Abbotsford FC 5-3 《Draxonia》Crimson Eagles
Shrewsbury Biscuits FC 3-0 Rodborough

aarons
man should I fkn bend over now??

scruttino
Haha, spread’em man you’re in prison. But in serious news Abbotsford almost handed Shrewsbury the title right there, it’s going to be hard to haul in a 5 point lead even with so many games left to play

Round 14

Can the Red Devils haul themselves out of one of the deepest holes ever dug in A-League history. Other than Crimson Eagles-SYD of which the Eagles are favourites to win, yet an upset could happen, the remaining games should follow the form line.

Red Devils United 2-0 City Water Motel
Myrtou FC 0-1 Hop Skip Jump
Telita 0-4 The Smoking Tree
《Draxonia》Crimson Eagles 2-3 SYDclub
Rodborough 0-1 Abbotsford FC
Glasston 2-2 Shrewsbury Biscuits FC

diesel-7
Don’t like my chances this week, think the City Water boys will be out for revenge after what happened last time out

scruttino
The upsets keep coming. The Devils over City Water, Syd over Crimson Eagles and Hop Skip Jump taking down Myrtou. Against the odds Glasston got a point against Shrewsbury, Abbotsford did it the hard way 1-0. Only the Smoking Tree had an expected comfortable win.

For all that though Shrewsbury extend their lead to 6-points

Round 15

Only Crimson Eagles have a chance of catching Shrewsbury, but to do so they’ll have to beat Glasston who love taking points off those above them.

On paper City Water-Myrtou looks a good game. Don’t count Abbotsford out of anything. If the chips fall in their favour the Red Devils could climb out of the relegation zone for the first time all season.

Red Devils United 4-5 Telita
City Water Motel 2-4 Myrtou FC
Hop Skip Jump 1-3 The Smoking Tree
《Draxonia》Crimson Eagles 2-1 Glasston
SYDclub 1-1 Rodborough
Abbotsford FC 0-2 Shrewsbury Biscuits FC

scruttino
Crimson Eagles had to win that game to have any chance of still winning the title. Myrtou regained their scoring form with a hat-trick to Dei and the Smoking Tree regain 3rd spot. The Red Devils comeback hit the wall as a clever tactic from Telita made it an even contest throughout an entertaining game grabbing the late winner. Abbotsford tried a similar tactical change to even the contest, yet the goals evaded them and Shrewsbury match on. The most surprising result was SYD performing woefully against Rodborough who were unlucky not to win the game after dominating it from start to finish.

Round 16

Quite a few mid-table battles. Yet nothing should change the overall standings up the top even if SYD pull off an upset. Matches of the round Shrewsbury-SYD and The Smoking Tree-City Water.

Telita 3-3 Hop Skip Jump
Myrtou FC 2-0 Red Devils United
The Smoking Tree 2-0 City Water Motel
Glasston 1-4 Abbotsford FC
Rodborough 2-3 《Draxonia》Crimson Eagles
Shrewsbury Biscuits FC 1-0 SYDclub

scruttino
Shrewsbury can thank their keeper Bleyd Renney for getting anything out of that game, SYD should have won and to not get anything was hard justice. Rodborough put a scare up Crimson Eagles as they have improved of late, while Abbotsford have relegated Glasston a likely playoff berth.

Round 17

A few good match ups in City Water – Glasston, Myrtou – Crimson Eagles and The Smoking Tree – SYD. Hop Skip Jump wouldn’t want to lose to Rodborough or the playoffs will be a pipe dream

City Water Motel 2-2 Glasston
Telita 1-2 Abbotsford FC
Hop Skip Jump 1-1 Rodborough
Myrtou FC 3-1 《Draxonia》Crimson Eagles
Red Devils United 2-3 Shrewsbury Biscuits FC
The Smoking Tree 1-3 SYDclub

diesel-7
Arrh, robbed! The Devils at least deserved a point from that. Story of my season

scruttino
Well you more than matched Shrewsbury, but I’m going to call this one early, no one will catch them from here. Myrtou beating Crimson Eagles was the nail in the coffin for any challenge to the title. But hey diesel, at least you don’t feel like Aaron does at the moment, he’ll be filthy again.

diesel-7
Haha, he’ll probably have another sore bottom too 😉

Round 18

With the title all but sown up, it’s now a case of who’ll get the remaining elite cup places of 2nd and 3rd.

The Crimson Eagles form slump should come to an end against Hop Skip Jump. Abbotsford must win against City Water to have any hope, and The Smoking Tree do not want to allow another Glasston upset. SYD’s form is improving, they’ve left their run late but are in no danger of the playoffs. If they win Rodborough will climb off the bottom.

《Draxonia》Crimson Eagles 1-3 Hop Skip Jump
Shrewsbury Biscuits FC 3-1 Myrtou FC
SYDclub 2-2 Red Devils United
Glasston 0-2 The Smoking Tree
Abbotsford FC 1-2 City Water Motel
Rodborough 0-3 Telita

senile_old_men
Ah. The old tipped by scruttino curse strikes again…

scruttino
Haha, you should have won. But after a few seasons of hard luck and unfortunate results at the wrong moments, Shrewsbury may set the largest points margin since Tosspot’s most dominant season

aarons
at least I wasn’t fkn reamed up the A@Zhole again

Round 19

Shrewsbury have won the title or near enough to give it to them early, and they deserve their success as the stand out team this season.

Attention is now focused on elite cup places and further down to the playoffs. Myrtou-SYD and The Smoking Tree-Abbotsford are both crucial games. While Glasston-Red Devils will be a relegation decider.

Myrtou FC 0-4 SYDclub
Red Devils United 0-0 Glasston
The Smoking Tree 2-1 Abbotsford FC
City Water Motel 2-2 Rodborough
Telita 4-0 《Draxonia》Crimson Eagles
Hop Skip Jump 2-1 Shrewsbury Biscuits FC

scruttino
Well that was interesting, Shrewsbury were soundly beaten by Hop Skip Jump who are doing their best to climb out of the relegation zone. City Water are in danger of falling into it. The Smoking Tree climb to second as Crimson Eagles lose yet again to Telita who are also making a charge for safety. Myrtou are not ending the season well, while a draw between the Glasston and the Red Devils has dropped them both into the bottom three. And here I was think the ending of the season was going to be boring because the title has been won, wrong again.

Round 20

I’m not sure what to make of this round, they appear to be mostly innocuous games, but the bottom of table has begun to fight back. So many should be even contests.

Shrewsbury Biscuits FC 1-2 Telita
《Draxonia》Crimson Eagles 0-1 City Water Motel
Rodborough 1-3 The Smoking Tree
Abbotsford FC 1-0 Red Devils United
Glasston 0-3 Myrtou FC
SYDclub 0-3 Hop Skip Jump

scruttino
Well these results won’t change who wins the A-League, but it will reduce the winning margin, playing havoc for teams going for 2nd and 3rd.

Glasston and Red Devils have gone from looking like comfortable playoff positions to direct relegation very quickly.

Round 21

I might be jumping the gun here but I’m going to call the end of the season or at least the last 3 rounds the revenge of Telita and Hop Skip Jump. Which has a good chance of continuing and placing City Water in a tight predicament where the playoffs are looming as a real prospect. Everyone from SYD and above are safe and The Smoking Tree seem to have 2nd on lock down, an admirable effort for a promotion team.

Myrtou’s player sale will affect their last season game leaving 3rd spot to either Crimson Eagles, Abbostford and SYD.

Telita 1-5 SYDclub
Hop Skip Jump 1-1 Glasston
Myrtou FC 4-0 Abbotsford FC
Red Devils United 5-0 Rodborough
The Smoking Tree 1-2 《Draxonia》Crimson Eagles
City Water Motel 3-0 Shrewsbury Biscuits FC

scruttino
Shrewsbury’s losing streak continues, but other than reducing their winning margin it doesn’t mean anything. Myrtou will lose to Rodborough in the final round, leaving Crimson Eagles and SYD to fight for 3rd place.

Everyone above the Playoffs are now safe. With their draw against Glasston, Hop Skip Jump have secured a playoff spot in 8th, with 9th place still available for either Telita, Red Devils and Glasston in the final round.

Final Round

It’s a bit early but I’ll be going out of internet range over Easter, so good luck to all in the final round

SYDclub 0-3 City Water Motel
Glasston 2-1 Telita
Abbotsford FC 0-1 Hop Skip Jump
Rodborough 11-0 Myrtou FC
《Draxonia》Crimson Eagles 1-3 Red Devils United
Shrewsbury Biscuits FC 0-1 The Smoking Tree

scruttino
As it turned out no one wanted 3rd spot, so despite selling up and being beaten by Rodborough, Myrtou.

Telita were relegated when they couldn’t win against Glasston and the Red Devils pulled a final day survival job toppled Abbotsford 1-0 to squeeze into 9th place. So we say goodbye to Glasston, Telita and Rodborough one more time and welcome Crystal Phallus, FC Ailsa and Brisbane Roar. All these teams have perfect records, but the quality of Division 1 teams is at an all-time low in Australia.

Hop Skip Jump and Red Devils United get another chance to save themselves in the Playoffs.

It’s been an up and down ride for most sides this season. Good results, mixed with indifferent ones especially for The Smoking Tree, whose return to the top flight has seen them lead the league before a recent form slump. Crimson Eagles, started badly yet have climbed into first place with their round 11 win over Shrewsbury. The game was horribly one sided and Shrewsbury were lucky not to concede 5 or more.

Myrtou FC have seen their form fluctuate, losses in important games have seen them fall back into mid table. Yet their scoring ability elevates them above most sides and has them rounding out the top 3 at the halfway point. Tactical nouse had seen Abbotsford climb as high as 1st, but like The Smoking Tree they’ve also hit a wall recently. SYD have scored 15 and conceded 15, going nowhere fast yet should be safe in mid table.

Last season’s champions City Water have struggled for any sort of form, Mesquita has scored all but 3 of their goals and while that worked for them last season, now it’s their Achilles heel. They’ve always been a team that prefers to outscore their opponents, but a leaky defence has cost them points.

Glasston seem destined for the playoff, the side is rebuilding on the run and while they can score, defensively they’ve struggled. Red Devils are the hard luck story, multiple losses by 1 goals have them rooted in the bottom third of the table, playoffs are the most they can hope for now. The bottom 3 all look as though they belong there, -30 goal differences for all of them mean they’ll likely trade places with either Rodborough, Hop Skip Jump and Telita receiving the spoon.

Round Commentary

Round 1

The circus begins again. I won’t predict anything for now, I’ll let the patterns emerge by themselves.

City Water Motel 2-1 SYDclub
Telita 2-2 Glasston
Hop Skip Jump 1-4 Abbotsford FC
Myrtou FC 19-0 Rodborough
Red Devils United 0-2 Crimson Eagles FC
The Smoking Tree 1-0 Shrewsbury Biscuits FC

senile_old_men
Either a big stuff up by Rodborough setting tactics, or another walkover team in A-league. If it’s the former Myrtou will be thanking them for a massive GD advantage for the rest of the season…

scruttino
Definitely a youth squad. The rest look good, crimson Eagles could have won by 5 or 6. Eric again gets upset, the league looks good though

anvisco
Maybe my guys are just super humans???

Round 2

Shrewsbury-City Water will be a revenge game for the bad luck Eric has had in recent times. Unless it continues and he gets another red card.

I’m interested in how Telita perform against SYD and The Smoking Tree-Crimson Eagles for how good the new sides are as The Smoking Tree got lucky against the Biscuits in the first round while the other performed very well.

SYDclub 1-2 Telita
Glasston 8-1 Hop Skip Jump
Abbotsford FC 2-1 Myrtou FC
Rodborough 2-1 Red Devils United
Crimson Eagles FC 0-1 The Smoking Tree
Shrewsbury Biscuits FC 2-1 City Water Motel

scruttino
Well that was an interesting round. Somehow Glasston scored 8 goals from the same amount of shot s as their opponents. But the rest of it was close as Shrewsbury got revenge on City Water, Abbotsford knocked off Myrtou, Telita downed SYD and The Smoking Tree continue to impress beating Crimson Eagles 1-0 in a hard fought game.

This season could be anything as yet.

Round 3

It’s exciting not knowing who will win and lose. Abbotsford on top of the table, proving the National Cup success wasn’t a fluke.

Telita 0-1 Shrewsbury Biscuits FC
City Water Motel 2-6 Crimson Eagles FC
The Smoking Tree 2-1 Rodborough
Red Devils United 2-2 Abbotsford FC
Myrtou FC 3-2 Glasston
Hop Skip Jump 0-2 SYDclub

scruttino
And we have a promotion side leading the league. The Smoking Tree look good, they don’t score as many as they’d hope, but neither do they concede. Crimson eagles had the luck in an even game to win by 4, while Shrewsbury, Myrtou and The smokking Tree had one-sided games with the score remaining close throughout.

aarons
ha ha im the greatest 3rd round champion of them allllllllllll stop the fuckN league man

Round 4

We have our first top of the table clash, not the sides that would’ve been predicted to be top 2 after 3 rounds but here we are.

I still don’t know where this league ladder will end up by the half way stage as last seasons champs City Water are in 9th and they still have much the same squad. I’ll just keep watching for now.

SYDclub 1-3 Myrtou FC
Glasston 2-1 Red Devils United
Abbotsford FC 2-1 The Smoking Tree
Rodborough 1-1 City Water Motel
Crimson Eagles FC 2-2 Telita
Shrewsbury Biscuits FC 3-1 Hop Skip Jump

scruttino
Woah, it’s going to be a close long season. But Abbotsford took down the Smoking Tree to become the new leaders. City Water continue to struggle, while Myrtou and Shrewsbury move into the top 3.

in other news this is now the 10th season of me writing on the A-League (yes 2 and half years), but that means all the competitions turn 10 as well, so I’ll do a history of the Rowden Medal, Bundy’s Boot, The Waterland and Cuddly Sheet winners at seasons end.

anvisco
Good work scruttimo!!

senile_old_men
A strange, yet strangely effective tactic from Telita to get the draw. Looks like I might need at least one other tactic this season…

mark8894
Took me a couple of tries at scout matches and a ohh well that will do but happy with the draw..

aarons
fk I shoulda won last game. fk fk fk

senile_old_men
How the tables have turned az. Lol

aarons
ha ha tell me a bloody bout it

Round 5

2nd vs 3rd when Myrtou host Shrewsbury, and the league leaders Abbotsford face last season champions City Water who have struggled to find any form of fluency this season. Glasston have been better this season so on current form their match up against The Smoking Tree should be even contest.

Hop Skip Jump 0-7 Crimson Eagles FC
Myrtou FC 3-5 Shrewsbury Biscuits FC
Red Devils United 1-2 SYDclub
The Smoking Tree 4-0 Glasston
City Water Motel 5-0 Abbotsford FC
Telita 2-2 Rodborough

Hi. My team is struggling. I need a new goal keeper.

aarons

diesel-7
wow, how many 1 goal losses am i going to have this season! sigh

rookerman
Poor demented sizey, off his medication again i see

Round 6

The table is beginning to take shape, Rodborough and Hop Skip Jump appear bound for relegation, Red Devils have been unlucky with their fate yet to be decided.

Crimson Eagles-Myrtou is the match of the round, Glasston-City Water will be a test to see if City Water can continue to climb the table.

Glasston 14-0 City Water Motel
Abbotsford FC 7-0 Telita
Rodborough 5-4 Hop Skip Jump
Crimson Eagles FC 2-1 Myrtou FC
Shrewsbury Biscuits FC 2-1 Red Devils United
SYDclub 1-1 The Smoking Tree

dissegnator
why couldnt City Water play a man down for me last match!

scruttino
A man down and another out of position, multiple tactic fails and the cumulative penalties made them lose big. Shrewsbury go top with The Smoking Tree-SYD draw, with Crimson Eagles 2nd on goal difference

diesel-7
Although I didn’t expect to get anything out of the Shrewsbury match, it’s still disappointing to lose by1 goal, AGAIN. This season is very close to being over for us, if its not already.

aarons
Farrrkkkk ha ha the cheekkky fkr changeD his tactic man fk fk fk fk

Round 7

City Water-The Smoking Tree and Abbotsford-Glasston are the dual games of the round. Given the tactics pass muster both should be cracking matchups. Close behind them is Shrewsbury-SYD, the biscuit should have their number, but you never know.

Down the bottom the bottom Hop Skip Jump have the best chance yet to post some points against Telita. Will the Red Devils register their fourth loss in a row by one goal? They’re the hard luck story of the season.

Hop Skip Jump 2-1 Telita
Red Devils United 1-2 Myrtou FC
City Water Motel 2-1 The Smoking Tree
Abbotsford FC 4-0 Glasston
Crimson Eagles FC 5-1 Rodborough
SYDclub 1-2 Shrewsbury Biscuits FC

senile_old_men
RDU went down by 1 goal again and drop to 12th with Hop Skip Jump’s maiden victory

diesel-7
LOL, 2-1 loss, who would have guessed!
Four 2-1 losses in a row and five out of the last six. If I’m in the bottom 2 after round 11 (which is almost assured) think i’ll sell up and rebuild…

aarons
man this is farrrkkD a fkn set up the fkr played with a full team. fk fk fk fk jst so u fkrs kno I fkn prefer u play with 10 playerZ or give me a fkn simming. help the great n fkn wonderful sizey out u bastarDZ ha ha

Round 8

Somehow Abbotsford have snuck back into the top 3, they may not stay their for long with Shrewsbury up next. Myrtou-City Water and Glasston-Crimson Eagles will be equally anticipated. Red Devils could get a win, I say could as you just don’t know with them this season.

Telita 1-1 Red Devils United
Myrtou FC 2-0 City Water Motel
The Smoking Tree 0-1 Hop Skip Jump
Glasston 1-2 Crimson Eagles FC
Rodborough 0-3 SYDclub
Shrewsbury Biscuits FC 2-1 Abbotsford FC

scruttino
You’ve got to love the tactics of Abbotsford, well I do anyway. They held their own and were unlucky not to get a point out the match. Red Devils may have to accept the bottom 3 is where they’ll stay, with an even contest against Telita. This just isn’t City Water’s season, while Crimson Eagles got the win and scored all 3 goals for both sides.

Hop Skip Jump upset the smoking tree as the have fall into a form slump after a bright start. Rodborough- SYD was an even contest despite the one sided scoreline, their table positions seem about right.

diesel-7
Well Telita didn’t read the script did they!, they’re meant to be scoring 2 against the Devils.

aarons
farrrkkkkk fk fk fk someone is yanking my big cock this is farkn BS man MZ u cunt farkkk off. rant over.

Round 9

There doesn’t appear to any blockbusters this round, but that doesn’t mean the upsets will stop in an intriguing round of games. SYD-Crimson Eagles could be a danger game the Eagles. Similarly I wouldn’t put it past Glasston to beat the Biscuits.

City Water Motel 1-5 Red Devils United
Hop Skip Jump 0-9 Myrtou FC
The Smoking Tree 3-1 Telita
SYDclub 1-4 Crimson Eagles FC
Abbotsford FC 2-2 Rodborough
Shrewsbury Biscuits FC 6-1 Glasston

diesel-7
5-1. WTF!!!……. ohhh, a red card.

scruttino
At least you won, maybe it’s a sign of a turn around in luck.

scruttino
Abbotsford held to a draw by rodborough, that’ll hurt their top 3 chances

diesel-7
Don’t get me wrong i’m stoked to get the W, was just surprised to see the 5-1 result against last years champs… especially when i’m sitting last! Hopefully my luck is changing?

Round 10

Crimson Eagles-Abbotsford is the game of the round, followed closely by Myrtou-The Smoking Tree. Down the other end, the bottom two playoff in a spoon battle, while City Water-Telita, Glasston-SYD slug it out for the playoffs and lower mid table spots. So some important games without the league leaders being affected.

Telita 0-13 City Water Motel
Red Devils United 0-0 Hop Skip Jump
Myrtou FC 1-3 The Smoking Tree
Glasston 0-1 SYDclub
Crimson Eagles FC 3-1 Abbotsford FC
Rodborough 1-5 Shrewsbury Biscuits FC

eric_the_eel
Nice to see Shrewsbury in 1st place 🙂 Although almost every win is by 1 goal…

diesel-7
Wow, 0-0 draw after both teams have 17 SoT! amazing keepers or rubbish strikers?… just an awesome game from the keepers I think

aarons
man thank fk I wasn’t bent over n reemed again

Round 11

A couple of big rounds ahead for Crimson Eagles and Shrewsbury. Shrewsbury would gain a big lead if they won both games, yet Crimson Eagles would lead by 4 should they do the same.

Abbotsford-SYD is a battle for lower league safety, but both sides look safe. The others games could blow out, yet we’ll be halfway there soon enough

Hop Skip Jump 2-3 City Water Motel
Telita 1-8 Myrtou FC
Red Devils United 5-1 The Smoking Tree
Abbotsford FC 0-1 SYDclub
Glasston 2-1 Rodborough
Crimson Eagles FC 2-1 Shrewsbury Biscuits FC

diesel-7
Well that was unexpected…. athough Scruttino did say there could be blow outs 😉

aarons
Farrrrkkkkk mothr fk. mz u cunt fk off. talk about not using lube and getting fkd up the fkn clacker. my virgin a@Zhole can’t take this shit man

scruttino
Crimson Eagles demolished the Biscuits like they had the munchies. They were lucky not to lose 5 or 6 nil

No one has run away with this yet, less blowouts and hat-tricks mean less points to strikers. So while most of this list are still from the front third, Midfielders for once have a chance to take the A-League MVP award. Agotnes from the Crimson Eagles has the midway lead, but not by much.

Dei and Mesquita hold a considerable lead over those below them, it will take some performance to bring them back from here.

A Cuddly Sheet

Goalkeepers (Goals Against) Clubs Clean Sheets
Oliver Beattie – (15) SYD Club 4
Eren Jaeger – (14) The Smoking Tree 3
Larkins Sawbridge – (17) Myrtou FC 3
Bruce Sinden – (11) Crimson Eagles FC 2
Jurek Wisniewski – (18) Abbotsford FC 2
Bongbong User – (34) City Water Motel 2
Yavuz Tanyol – (5 games – 13) Hop Skip Jump 2
Bleyd Renney – (13) Shrewsbury Biscuits FC 1
Danny Gray – (17) Red Devils United 1
Lubomir Sito – (25) Glasston 1

Surprisingly SYD keeper Oliver Beattie leads from newcomer Eren Jaeger “Meister” via The Smoking Tree. While Beattie has been a steady performer for a while now, he’s not a house hold name by any means. If he remains at the top by the end of the season, I’d be surprised.

Things are much closer this season. No youth teams, means points are evenly spread with the current league leaders also topping the Waterland. It’s tight below them though 2nd to 6th span 3 points, so there’s plenty of room to move.
