Welcome to Aussiezone 230

Welcome to Aussiezone, the 230th edition of our humble Zone. This is the most in depth and professional Zone I’ve put together yet, with local content ranging from A-League reviews, playoffs and previews – revealing the winners of all the competitions and discussing the new season, National Cup articles, AIHL, plus National Team news and how the Aussie Legends fared in the inaugral legends league, with the second round inductees introduced.

There are articles and special interviews courtesy of our international RA partners in Brazil – Maxximus, Turkey – Isk42 and Cankuthan, Italy – Theking94 and Sweden – Bebben delivering content with a global relevance for us all to read, much appreciated. Isk42 has done a great job with several interviews from the higher ranks of crew, xA’s and the winning coach from the recent European Cup.

But it’s not all rosy, we are in for a fight to keep our Zone as a stand alone quaterly released. Our MA Yunus is on our side, so that’s a good thing, but crew want all countries to release 3 zones a season or be rolled into collective regional zones to do so.

I flatly told Yunus my opinion on the matter and he agreed with me, in short there is no way I’m releasing 3 Zones of this same standard every season, writing 10-12 articles a month. That’s the equivalent of doing a full-time job for free. There is a reason every HRA before me has burnt out and quit his post, they were overworked putting together a magazine they had to released to often.

This problem has been exascerbated with the Australian community contracting. I’ve been asked to find new RA’s to help me out and if any are out there that would like to be involved as active writers new or old then by all means get in touch with me. But neither will I force people to do a job they don’t want to do, a point on which Yunus and I agree. Being an RA is suppose to be fun and enhance the experience of playing the game for those who choose to get involved through their own free will.

It’s quality, not quantity and how fast you knock them out that makes people want to read the zone. Everyone knows I will release a zone the weekend before a new season starts, it’s regular schedule you can trust, released when Managerzone has it’s peak number of users online to maximise it’s exposure when the new season begins.

I went back to one zone a season to avoid the burnout of those before me and keep the workout manageable with a lack of contributing RA’s. Eric and Therk have been unable to write this time round, with Senile Old Men the sole fellow aussie to help out with the national team article as head coach, Senile it’s much appreciated.

This is an unusual welcome to Zone 230, but I wanted to inform you all of what is going on and where the future of aussiezone sits within the mechanics of the internal Managerzone beast. I’m willing to contribute to a regional zone, but they have been tried before and failed to engage with the users. It would be a shame to have our Blog become inactive because of an internal decision I fundamentally disagree with. Hopefully that won’t happen and I’ll do my best to keep things as they are right now.

In a smaller markets such as Australia, I believe a well done single zone per season, combining a local focus, with articles about the global game is a better option than a regional zone. From tracking wordpress’s views data on who reads from where around the globe. I know that this format of Aussiezone already has an international readership across Europe, Asia, North and South America through multiple countries on all continents. So Yunus and I will fight to keep aussiezone as you know it alive and well. Enjoy the read, Cheers, Matt

Take out the first 2 games of the season when City Water forgot the season began conceding 19 goals in 2 games and who knows. they may have not lost a game all season. We’ll never know the answer, but they only drew 2 games in the second half of the season as Myrtou rose from the ranks to be their only serious challenger.

Some good fortune in City Water’s second last game against Shrewsbury, in theory sealed them the title. But Glasston had other ideas and almost handed the title too Myrtou as City Water scrapped home with a 4-3 victory in the last round to maintain a 1 point lead.

Crimson Eagles benefitted from SYD drawing their last game against Bondi of all teams to sneak into 3rd and earn another elite cup group place. Shrewsbury fell away badly towards the end of the season through a mixture bad luck and poor results, they could easily have won the title, but it just wasn’t their season.

SYD maintained strong results all the way to the end and Abbotsford surprised themselves to win the Seniors National Cup when all the favourites bowed out in the group phases or quarter-finals.

Glasston got the better of the Red Devils in the run home to secure safety for another A-League season, rookerman is now the longest serving active manager Australia has. He’s seen everyone he began with leave and a few come back, his philosophy of live within you’re means and allow starting domestic players to retire has serve him well.

Round Commentary

Round 12

We repeat last round. Can Myrtou get revenge on City Water or will City Water and Shrewbury open a gap at the top.

Myrtou didn’t quite get their revenge but a draw means they won’t fall to far behind. Still the top of the table will remain in flux through the next round, Shrewsbury are showing they are the team to beat, can the Eagles keep the league close.

Round 13

Can Myrtou avert their recent slide against SYD? Will Shrewsbury fend off Crimson Eagles again. The rest of the games are less interesting, yet another Glasston-Abbotsford battle will be crucial to the lower mid table.

Round 14

Red Devils-Myrtou and City Water-SYD are the matches of the round. These games threw up some surprise results last time round, even Abbotsford got a draw with Shrewsbury. City Water were beginning their good run of form that has them second overall, a win should give them a chance at the title towards the end of the season.

Well that’s turned the table on it’s head, Abbotsford put in a storming performance with an astute tactic to draw with Shrewsbury, they should have won with more shots and possession, but that’s a standard result when it’s a one sided short passing vs one sided wing battle.

But City Water have turned a slow start to the season around to lead it from Crimson Eagles. We’ve an intriguing finish to the season coming up

Round 15

City Water-Red Devils was a good game last time round, the Devils lost but held the majority of possession.

The rest of the games appear one sided contests, but the Amputees almost pulled off a draw last round thanks to the efforts in goal of 6 ball keeping star Phillip ‘Von’ Ludwick. In a recent youth game he made 10 saves to keep a clean sheet, I don’t know how he does it, but keep it up son.

Round 16

The most interesting game of the round is Red Devils-SYD, most other games a one sided contests. Though Glasston have been known perform well against Shrewsbury.

The top 6 all play each other, these games could go many ways. City Water and Shrewsbury would start favourites against their respective opponents, but Myrtou-Crimson Eagles is an even money bet. Below them 7th to 10th also face off for the playoff positions.

Round 18

No big games between the top of the table, but Glasston-SYD and Shrewsbury-Red Devils will provide the closest contests. The title defining games will have to wait until next round.

Round 19

With teams up the top being close on points, this is the first of 2 big rounds of matches that count towards who wins and loses the title, and who has to run the playoff gauntlet.

The top 4 all play each other, while Glasston v Red Devils fight it out for 7th and 8th.

You’ve got to hope Shrewsbury beat them now and the goal difference remains in your favour. Your defense is good, you’re giving my 17 goals conceded for all of last season a run for it’s money. You’re on 16 now, 3 clean sheets and you can beat it.

With Abbotsford and Glasston winning, the Red Devils seem bound for the playoffs.

Brooklyn almost beat the Babes in an epic contest.

4-1 down after 30 odd minutes looked like it was going to get out of control, but the boys fought back to 4-4 before conceding a late winner. Hopefully I’ll get lucky in the lottery that is the play-offs

Round 20

Red Devils-Abbotsford and Myrtou-Glasston are the pick of the game this round. None of the other games should be close.

Red Devils need to win for any chance of avoiding the playoffs. While the title will be decided next round when Shrewsbury play City Water.

Nothing of note to say about results this round, everyone won who was expected to. Red Devils now seem destined for the playoffs and Bondi should join them.

Round 21

This is it. if City Water win or draw they should secure the title. They play Glasston in the last round and should beat them comfortably. But Shrewsbury is another matter, this could go either way.

Should City Water lose, Myrtou with a better goal difference will take the title despite their points being the same.

Congrats to City Water, it’s not official yet as a simming against Glasston in the final round could steal the title from them, but well done. They missed the beginning of the season and slowly dragged it back before finishing strongly to head the field.

Round 22

Most sides know where they’ll finish, but we’ve got one last round of games before the off season. Some sides are already preparing and have transfer listed a few players.

I’ll be dropping down and won’t be back for about 6 seasons at the least. So will Brooklyn Youth, the Babes are as always in limbo and Bondi will test the waters of the playoffs again with the Red Devils.

Everyone 7th and above is safe, with only 3rd left to play for, though SYD are strong favourites to retain it

It bears mentioning that Mesquita was 17 goals behind Ulizes at the halfway mark of the season. Meaning in 11 games of A-League football he outscored him by 21 goals, that’s some effort.

Larkins Sawbridge was a wall of defiance in the last 11 games, only conceding 17 goal all season to match Rob Duncan’s exploits for the Amputees in season 55. But Sawbridge bettered Duncan 9 clean sheets, posting 11 of his own.

An Ode to Lemmy

Flicking through the sides during the U/18 national cup, I couldn’t help but notice the name Kurt Cobain pop up as striker on the Red Devils United roster. As an enthusiast for renaming players after my favourite musicians I welcomed the addition to family. We can now add Kurt to the list of resurrected musicians.

Kurt Cobain – Nirvana frontman, songwriter and guitarist

Larry Graham – The inventor of playing style called Slap Bass (or as he calls it pluck’in and thump’in), bass player for Sly and the Family Stone and Graham Central Station

Clifford Burton – Metallica’s legendary bass player

Shane MacGowan – The Pogues main singer and songwriter, as well as loving a tipple

John Bonham – One half of Led Zeppelin’s rhythm section

Keith Richards – The Rolling Stones and Expensive Winos guitarist and many solo albums

But lastly in memory of recent events we must take a minutes silence for now City Water player ‘Ian Kilmister’. Most wouldn’t recognise his real name, rather knowing him by the affectionate title of ‘Lemmy’, or Saint Lemmy the founding patron of Metal. Motorhead’s frontman, bassist and all time rock legend died recently from an aggressive form of cancer only diagnosed within a month of his actual death. At least in Managerzone Ian ‘Lemmy’ Kilmister shall live on for a few more seasons yet. His funeral was broadcast live on Youtube this morning, rest in peace.

Shrewsbury have begun the season well, they are one of the favourites for title and lived up to the promise that again fell short last season. City Water missed the start of the season, but have steadily climbed the league to sit in a deserving 2nd place.

The surprise team so far has been SYD, they were god awful last season. After 11 games they sat 11th, with only 6 points. They’ve turned it around in a remarkably short period of time. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again Myrtou should never have been relegated from the league back in season 54, playing a youth team in one playoff game meant a season spent in Div 1. But they are back and belong in the top half of the table.

There is always a side that doesn’t quite live up to their own expectations and Crimson Eagles fit the bill. Trying to refresh your squad by selling aging players about to deteriorate or just starting to and earn enough funds to buy a younger player is difficult and they may have missed the window to win the A-League with their current squad.

Glasston have improved, but one has to take in mind two sides have sold up and are easy beats, Hasslehoff Babes aren’t much better and Bondi Icebergs just above them. Making 4 teams which should lose every game they play against those above them. That leaves only one playoff spot for a side with an active chances of avoiding it. Along with Glasston, Abbotsford and Red Devils are in a fight between themselves to avoid just that.

Welcome back everyone. We’re easing into another A-League season, no crazy games to start off. City Water-Glasston should be a good contest, and Red Devils-Crimson Eagles a test for the new boys.

Round 2

Based on their performances last season City Water vs Shrewsbury is the first top end clash of the season. The Babes vs Bondi is the young seniors battle of the round, with Abbotsford vs Myrtou a good test of how good Myrtou are.

Hopefully Macco fields a full tactic soon, he’s shooting himself in the foot going up against a Shrewsbury without a right back. The bottom 2 look set to fight it out between themselves and the troy-hoff battle was a close contest. City Water are a good side should they want to compete.

The big surprise was SYD thumping Crimson Eagles, even before the red card they were well in front. But we shouldn’t be surprised, a new season always throws up a few surprises. Myrtou continue to look impressive

Round 3

Myrtou-Glasston looms as the match of the round. City Water-Bondi depends on whether Macco fields a full team.

Abbotsford-Red Devils would be the 2nd most interesting game of the round. Crimson Eagles have been unpredictable, yet the Babes are young.

The most interesting results were Myrtou crushing Glasston and Abbotsford over Red Devils.

City Water finally got a tactic together, Bondi and the Babes look set to battle out the last relegation playoffs position. Though who will join them is a long way from being known.

Round 4

On paper and this seasons results so far Shrewsbury-Myrtou are the best sides in the league. So we gear up for the first leg of the end of season title deciders.

The bottom four play each other so the blowouts of recents rounds should be lessened. City Water-Crimson Eagles, Glasston-Red Devils and SYD-Abbotsford should all be good games. SYD, Glasston and Crimson Eagles would all be expected to win, but something tells me not all will.

The title favourites play out a draw and SYD unexpectedly go top. No one thought that was possible before the season started, they have Glasston next to test out their new resolve. Amputees become favourites for the spoon and Crimson Eagles dissapoint again. High passing percentages aren’t enough if you can’t score.

Expect quite a few one sided results, on paper the most even game should be SYD-Glasston, but other than that there’ll be some blowouts

Crimson Eagles are getting better, but Myrtou still go in as favourites. Could they be the first team to be promoted and win the A-League, we’ll see.

At the bottom it’s time for the spoon showdown, could go either way, but with 2 salary players Brooklyn have the advantage.

Shrewsbury-SYD is the other game of note. The rest are mid-table to lower battles like the Bondi-Red Devils and City Water-Abbotsford, both look intriguing on paper.

A round of upsets, could Shrewsbury be denied another title by the sim. SYD took part one of their match ups with a bit of help. But Myrtou lost to Crimson Eagles who seem to have found what was lacking when the season began.

The top half play the bottom half except for Glasston-Shrewsbury. The Biscuits should win, but they have a knack for losing game the stats say they shouldn’t. Still if anyone said SYD would be leading the league before we began no one would have beleived them. Yet hear we are.

Round 8

Crimson Eagles-Glasston, Red Devils-City Water and Abbotsford-Bondi are the pick of the games.

Will Crimson Eagles up and down season continue, they’ve sold a couple of players up front giving Glasston a chance.

Crimson Eagles put Glasston to the sword, Bondi find a way to win another game they should have lost by the same scoreline, and City Water got the best of the Red Devils in closest game of the round. Everything else was a good old fashioned drubbing, SYD hold on for now thanks to the lack of opposition, but one gets the idea they’re living on borrowed time.

We should call this the season of goals, goals and more goals. The A-League hasn’t seen such heavy scoring in a long time, it’s a stark contrast to last season when scoring was tough and the Amputees took the title with 51 goals for the season. That’s right the whole season, with 52 Shrewsbury have already scored more than that in 8 games. Last season Crimson Eagles were the highest scoring side with 66 and Shrewsbury 63.

But is this season is an anomaly or the new normal? Perhaps we should award the title based on defensive goals conceded, as with only 4 goals conceded so far Myrtou are tracking the Amputees tough defence of 17 conceded for the season.

Round 9

No huge blockbuster game, but some intriguing battles such as SYD-City Water, Bondi-Glasston and Red Devils-Myrtou. Even the Babes should record their 3rd win against the Amputees.

Everyone waits for the next round between SYD and Myrtou to see just how good SYD are and vice versa

I’m loving the tactics of Abbotsford, every round it’s something slightly different and tailored to what the opposition will play. It doesn’t always work, but he’d be a good National Team coach, someone give him a NCA spot

The turn round and most games should go by the form sheet, only Myrtou-City Water stands out as a close contest. It’s City Water’s time to prove they are a title contender or battle it out for 3rd.

The final score doesn’t tell the full story of the match, everything on both sides was extremely even. Brisbane Roar generated a few more shots, but the luck was with them and the goals went in. A good result given they’ve finished 4th in every playoff group I’ve ever written about. Could this finally be their season to get off the bottom.

Brisbane Roar’s Munroe Ashwin played the game of his life repelling everything Bondi threw at him. By the end of the game through 14 saves and 3 lucky escapes off the woodwork, he’d preserved the 1-0 lead gained by Randolph Andrusiow in the 6th minute for the next hour and half. No matter what happened in their last game Brisbane Roar won’t be coming last this season. Bondi on the other hand could feel downright shafted, after a red card in their 1st game and now a simming in the 2nd had them firmly rooted to the bottom of the group.

Dewrang Lions – Telita 02-01-2016 12:00 1-2

With 75% tackles completed Telita put a stop to everything Dewrang Lions attempted, they dominated the game and almost lost it. A Dewrang Lions own goal ended up being the difference as they scored with the last kick of the game. Had they not put the ball in their own net, Dewrang Lions could have got a draw in a match they were evidently 2nd best, yet wasteful shooting by Telita kept them in it right until the final whistle.

Sha Kuan from Bondi finally found the net twice to lead them off the bottom of the group. An even contest shots wise was coupled with a tough tackling Bondi unit that attempted 40 more tackles than their opponents. Defence won the day for Bondi.

The group decider was not a game Brisbane Roar will want to remember, they were terrible. Telita had 27 shots to Brisbane Roar’s 7. In every other area of the park Telita dominated by an equally large margin, the gulf in class was evident from the opening whistle to the end of the game. Telita earn promotion.

Rather than write it in every game Narraweena played I’ll say it here. They haven’t sold up, Nav has not set an active tactic for his playoff games, had he done so he would have challenged for promotion. Hopefully he comes back in time for the new season and hasn’t left us for good. So all Narraweena games are effectively walkovers in this group and the goal scored against them became crucial.

A big win for the Red Devils

The Kangaroos had a slight edge in stats and overall play with a higher passing and tackling percentage, and more shots. But they couldn’t make it count on the scoreboard, so a goal in the first half for Harding to give Skoolage the lead and Travers to equalise in the second was how the match finished.

The Red Devils had everything in control, more possession, passing/tackling percentage and a hat-trick to their striker Teddy Sheringham as the 80th minute went by. The Kangaroos made 3 seemingly forlorn subs to throw everything at them in the last 10 minutes, even with a red card in the 86th minute to Red Devils defender Bruce Hanslow they couldn’t give up a 3 goal lead, right! Wrong, goals in the 89th, 92nd and 95th the last two deep and deeper into injury time from Travers to draw a game in which they were completely out played until the last 10 minutes.

Not quite as many goals as the Red Devils, but still a good win

To say the Red Devils got lucky is an understatement, a red card in the 15th minute to Katona with them up by 1 brought Skoolage into the contest. They began to dominate possession, equalising in the 34th through Harding, then against the run of play Sheringham stole the Red Devils 2nd the get them back the lead at half time.

Whoever won this game was getting promoted and Skoolage would have fancied their chances against 10 men. The second half began well with them drawing level again through Harding in the 55th. But from then on nothing went in, the goal that would have taken them back to the A-League and won them the match failed to materialise. The Red Devils had escaped the playoffs by the skin of their teeth and a big slice of luck.

Kangaroos – Narraweena Azzurri 04-01-2016 10:00 11-0

With the draw in the other playoff game they had a chance with a big winning margin to get through on goal difference. The Kangaroos would need 13-14 goals and they tried their best scoring 11, but it just wasn’t enough.

As you can see in group 2 with all teams level on points, the final table standing reflect who scored the most against Nav, Red Devils won that battle and retained their A-League spot.

We welcome back both old and new faces, Rodborough are back with a bit more experience and The Smoking Tree return after a complete rebuild. We have two new sides enter the fold in Telita and Hop Skip Jump.

Looking over all the squads we have an A-League season where no clubs are bunnies, every side could beat another on their day without the need for a simming, just general luck. Now obviously some sides are still stronger than others, but it is refreshing to be undertaking the most competitive A-League season in recent memory.

No side has completely sold up, those that did last season have departed and all that’s left is a few sides tweaking things as they try and offload some aging players to refresh their squads.

Last seasons winners City Water Motel, runners up Myrtou FC, Shrewsbury Biscuits and Crimson Eagles start as favourites. Though in a recent forum thread Crimson Eagles manager Senile Old Men has written his side off as title contenders.

I can’t see myself winning the title in seniors without biting the bullet and selling a few more of my older players. Feel a strange sense of loyalty to some of the deteriorating old fellas though.

No major squad changes, not much of a war chest to invest in anyone new. A few older guys might deteriorate further but hopefully not too quickly. Would still be expecting top 3 but will be tougher this season

I wouldn’t throw Crimson Eagles under the bus just yet, as Glasston have shown by keeping on going and allowing domestic players to retire naturally, older players remain difficult to beat regardless of how far they deteriorate.

Yes, no easy points this year from teams selling up. Personally, if we can stay clear of the bottom 3 auto relegation spots I’ll be happy enough – anything more than that will be a bonus (and a surprise!).

Personally I’ve no idea who will win the spoon, for once there are no sides doomed to abject failure before they begin. All relegation spots will be contested for the first time in recent memory.

Bear in mind there are always surprises, Myrtou were promoted and took the league by storm, being unlucky to miss out on the title. Will a new side have the same impact, on past averages at least one will be highly competitive.

For another season the reign of Warringah continues. Finlandia were clearly the next best side but when it came to playing the Wizards they still come up short. Warringah have a stranglehold over the A-League since the Thunderbirds sold up, which is similar to what happened before the Iceholes sold up.

Relaxmore have been making steady progress each season and improved their final positioning to 3rd. Along with the top 3 only the Auckland Anvils had any substantial positive goal difference.

A big drop in quality was then evident to Slap Bang Wallop, Yaroona and Polar Bear Club who had an individual battle between themselves without fear of falling into the playoffs as matches against side below were score fests.

The AIHL playoff winners were split between current AIHL team Arawata retaining their place and newcomers Kiras Krusaders HC knocking off Caboonbah to gain one. The Jugular Vein sold up, Telita remained active without much of a team, while the Grateful Dead were inactive.

As opposed to football top scorer charts, players don’t amass as many goals and the results are much closer. Finlandia had the most potent striker with Shipman and Atkin finishing 1st and 3rd respectively, split by Tenser and Monson in 2nd and 4th. Relegated teams Caboonbah and The Grateful Dead shared the ignomy of having the most ill-disciplined players for the season in Douglas Ward and Ren Mewburn. No wonder they aren’t around anymore.

Alfred Sparrow was by far the most successful player in the face-off, he won almost 30 more face offs than his nearest competitor for only 6 more shifts on the ice over the season.

Will Finlandia be able to beat Warringah for the title, Relaxmore and Auckland Anvils will then battle it out for 3rd and 4th. Beyond that it’s mediocrity unless a promoted side can mount a challenge, but the ice is thin in Australia and Ice Hockey is a minority sport at best. Let’s hope the air conditioning keeps the Barns cool and the Zamboni’s keep the ice frozen, as they hypnotized us going around and around and around…

Sweden def Australia 6-1

We went into the game knowing Sweden would have us covered in terms of pure talent. Assuming they would play wings we played a wide back 4, and went with a short passing tactic mainly due to the squad’s slightly higher count of passing vs AP.

Australia def Israel 4-1

After leaking goals against Sweden we changed things up to a wings tactic and saw some positive signs against the Israelis. Lawson was enormous on the wing before going off injured, setting up Milligan for 2 and Algoud for 1.

Ecuador drew Australia 2-2

This was our make or break game to qualify for the World Cup. Ecuador had a superior goal difference after getting a bigger result against Israel than what we managed in the earlier group matches. We stuck with the same wings tactic that we employed against Israel with a few minor tweaks. It was a disastrous start as we conceded 2 goals in the opening 11 minutes, but we clawed our way back to draw level in the 75th. Lawson and Milligan were again a deadly combination with Milligan netting both goals.

Despite having more chances than our opponent we had to settle for a draw, and thus our World Cup aspirations came to an end.

Notes from the National Coach

Our Under 21 depth was found lacking, with all Aussie managers seemingly hell bent on either creating defenders or strikers. We only had 2 players in the whole squad capable of playing on a wing and little to no AP in the mids to get it to them. Hopefully the next NC will have more to work with if we all start training passing and AP in our next lot of youths/U21s.

Thanks to Eric and Troy for their contributions, it was like pulling teeth to get anyone to put their hands up to assist from the top echelon of Aussie managers, so appreciate you guys stepping in with some tactical advice when requested.

Our fixture in the group stages effectively meant our fate was decided in the first three round as we came up against the MZ minnows in India, Guatemala and MZ Country.

India – 3-1 win

We dominated this match but couldn’t convert our chances, with only 3 goals from 21 shots.

Goals: Minne 2, Beattie 1

Best: Aliendi in defence was huge shutting down their winger (26 tackles, 23 intercepts), Minne with 18 shots for 2 goals was also serviceable

Guatemala – 1-1 draw

This was a shock result and had the potential to derail our campaign. Guatemala matched our performance, and our 5 man defence against short passing didn’t work as well as anticipated.

Goals: Minne 1

Best: Bunworth down back was the only one to stick tackles (71%) and Minter off the bench as a winger stepped up in the last 30 mins after Nolan did nothing all game.

MZ Country – 3-0 win

Solid team performance reverting back to a regulation wings tactic against a weaker opponent.

Goals: Minne 2, Bundy 1

Best: Kilmister in the mids setup plenty of play and defended well. Knevett in the backs was also solid on their winger and hit targets distributing from defence.

USA – 3-3 draw

Probably our best performance for the tournament, and the first time we went in as underdogs. Again we went with a fairly standard wing tactic (if it’s not broken why fix it?). We went up 2-0 early, and were 3-2 up until a last minute equaliser by the US in the 92nd.

Goals: Minne 2, Shorten 1

Best: Minne converted a lot better this match with his 2 goals from just 6 chances, and Shorten’s work through the mids was vital.

Chile – 1-2 loss

Our only loss for the group stages came against Chile. We matched them in terms of stats, but their 91st minute strike sunk us. Minne was goalless for the first time this tournament.

Goals: Beattie 1

Best: Most of the play was through the mids, with Feutrill and Kilmister the standouts. Beattie also played his best game for the tournament.

Argentina: 4-3 win

Knowing we were safely through the group stages, this was a chance for our B team to get a run to avoid cards for the playoffs. In a simming of epic proportions we scored 4 goals from 10 chances to steal a victory from a much more fancied opponent. This time we snuck in the late winner in the 95th

Goals: Kinnard 2, Aroege 2

Best: Duncan in goals has a huge 26 saves, and Gillingwater through the mids hit plenty of targets

Playoffs

China – 3-4 loss

This game was a seesawing affair, with China coming out of the blocks quickly to go up 2-0 in the 17th minute. The team rallied with Minne bagging 2 in quick succession before Feutrill gave us the lead in the 54th. From there a red card to Aliendi made life hard, and China took the chances equalising not long after before putting the final nail in the coffin in the 91st minute to end our world cup campaign.

Fair to say a combination of injury and the red card played a key part in the outcome of this match, but nevertheless we were competitive against a much larger nation and walk away with our heads held high.

Goals: Minne 2, Feutrill 1

Best: Christina in defence was a workhorse, and Minne again converted well to cap a spectacular tournament.

The Inaugral Legends League and New Australian Legends Inductees

The second group of inductees into the Australian Legends is larger than I had intended, but as I went through the players I thought why not. They all deserve to make it. They’re induction is also a reaction to the first legends league, identifying our weaknesses and strengthening the squad.

So we have 10 new players, a mixture of those recently retired to those in their 50’s. Some inductees are symbolic and are won’t make the starting team, but thoroughly deserve their place through long term club and national team service.

Others are less well known or had limited opportunities with the national team when wings became the dominant tactic, leaving the short passing specialists to knock it around in the reserves while watching on from the stands.

So far wings has been avoided by all managers of their respective legends sides, it’s a silent collective agreement for the good of the game. It’s really given these games an old school feel, bringing variety and fun back to the matches. In a recent forum post gave an update as to how we performed

Early on our subs weren’t coming off the bench and we got crunched hard, but once they came on things evened out. Fitting all our great strikers into that team was fun, but we need a bit more down back and in the midfield. So yes, some strikers will miss out in the next legends league.

Ivan Hogan has suggested his spot be given to someone else, as other teams are taking these legends leagues to seriously, so before he gets a long term injury he’ll move into an assistant coaching role for the Aussie legends.

Since this post Hal Guy has called and ask for the same deal, I’ve a feeling Ivan spoke with him about retiring for a second time together. I’ve accepted both their offers, as having our all time great keeper and the all time leading scorer in a single world cup on the coaching panel will only bolster the squad further.

After Hal Guy left the national team a few keepers came and went without much fanfare, none of them are remembered in the public imagination. Even Paz Beattie can be easily forgotten, as after an initial sale for just $50 000 as a 19 year old, he spent most of playing career in the Chinese lower divisions 2, 3. The team is inactive now, but Paz spent 12 years of his life there, he speaks fluent mandarin as a result and has a Chinese wife.

After brief stint with Wings on Ice in the Dutch Eredivise before they sold up, he spent the rest of his career in Turkey’s lower divisions, spending a couple of seasons with three sides before retiring with Abideturk JK in division 5.

He didn’t win any premier division titles or have any cup success and the end of his career with the national team coincided with the rise of Elliot Cuddihy who pushed him on to the bench during the successful 2013 Conferations Cup run. But still this was the crowning glory of his career, mentoring the younger Cuddihy through his first international tournament while he was in his last was as rewarding as being on the pitch for the final whistle.

So where do you live now?

In Turkey, the political climate is tenuous right now but life in general keeps on going. My eldest is entering the Aussie equivalent of High School, so I don’t move around much beyond short business trips or special occasions. But I’ll have to clear some time for the legends squad, half the games are in Europe though so I’ll be able to fly in and out quite easily. The longest hauls will be going back to Australia for our home games.

You played in a lot of lower leagues, how do they compare to your stint with Wings on Ice?

It really depends, the lower leagues of China and Turkey are tough. The main difference is the standard of players in front of you, Wings on Ice had a great squad, my time there was the most challenging and rewarding of my career.

Any favourite memories of the 2013 confed cup run?

It was clear from the management that Toss was giving his keeper the starting spot, but Elliot deserved it. He was good, we roomed together throughout that competition, with a lot time to chat things over both on the training park and in the evenings. It was his first international tournament, so I took him out for dinner a few times, introduced him to the family and showed him the healthy way to travel with the national team. Good times, a great way to go out of the international spotlight.

The contrast between the careers outside of the national team football couldn’t be more different for Cuddihy and Beattie. Cuddihy never left Australia only playing for two clubs, the second of which was Arrested Developers.

Their Cuddihy won 5 A-League titles and 4 National Cups. Including 3 League/Cup doubles and a run of 4 consecutive A-League title, both achievements occurred between season 47 and 50. Throw in a Bessie A League for the Lemon Turd, his National Team success in the Confederation Cup and he’s led a full career.

During the season I took over writing about the A-League I began running the A-Leagues keeping award for clean sheets in a season. It was a keeping competition to rival the top scorers award for strikers. The idea began while writing about Division 1 and in honour of the inaugural running the winner would have the competition named after them.

Nick Hanlen won Division 1 inaugural keeping award, so it was called Hanlen’s Hand Warmer’s. Cuddihy won the A-Leagues inaugural season and thus the Cuddly Sheet was born. A traditionally handwoven warm blanket made from farm raised Nepalese Mountain Yak fur has been given to each winner since. Current Shrewsbury Biscuits and national team keeper Bleyd Renney has won 3 of them.

But this is about Elliot, so our questions began with the Confed Cup. How was it being a part our only international tournament trophy in your first tournament as a starting player?

Surreal, I was somewhat of a captain’s pick by my Tosspot, but with the guidance of Paz I learnt on the job, he gave me advice and remains a great friend. We got extremely lucky when Uruguay upset Brazil in the other Semi-final, they dominated that game but came up short.

That was the beginning of people using wings and throughout the tournament we took full advantage of the benefits it gave us, in the end we won the final comfortably thanks to 4 goals from Rizzardo. I don’t know anyone else who has scored 4 goals in the final of any international competition. His performance guaranteed that we won.

There was a big Arrested Developers connection with that side?

Yeah, we had a great squad that won 4 consecutive A-League titles. I think 6 of the starting players in the final came from our domestic side. Hess in defensive, Miller and Wharton in Midfield, Rizzardo up front, Pincini on the wing, myself in goals and Alcock came off the bench. A couple more became Arrested Developers player soon after the tournament ended through transfers. Too bad they are inactive now.

You know, there aren’t any player functions for an inactive club, the only time we see each other is at the Rowdon Medal count.

How do you feel about the Cuddly Sheet?

Well I got the first one, they originally made two, one for the winner and the other to go on display. The second gets passed between the winner club to hang in the trophy room and a new one get commission each year for the player that wins. Renney’s got 3 now, I’ve got 2, but the first was a special moment, we never had a keeping award before.

Any input into the design, why Yak fur?

It doesn’t itch and retains heat.

Amazingly these clubs are all still around, Crimson Eagles took an extended break, but I’ve not been able to say that about any other player of this age to be inducted in the Legends hall of fame. Their manager Senile Old Men had this to say about his now retired player.

Whitmore played Welsh Premier League in one of the great teams of the era, and finished up playing in my mob for a while so had a successful run.

Despite only having 8 speed, Whitmore was sold for 9 million AUD or more twice. A fortune back in the day. His first sale occurred when he was 22-23 from The Smoking Tree to Mighty Morphing Sheep. With them he won 3 Welsh Premier League titles in 5 seasons before returning home to the Crimson Eagles and play out the rest of his career. Winning an A-League title, 3 national cups and a season 9 cup.

With only 8 speed and 5 ball control you’d struggle to sell for million these days?

I know right, but back then having 8 shooting and 9 tackling meant I could play forward and back. Ideal to be a supporting striker, the shooting came later but it was nice to have.

The boy from the Wodonga came a long way from his roots. Inter Wodonga have been a youth team for a long time. Winning one domestic U/18 title in season 37, then continuing on to this day as an active member while never achieving anything else. Grantow as well were getting better and almost made the A-League before selling Miller to Arrested Developers in season 46.

In 5 season at the club he won 4 national cup and 5 A-League titles, with 3 of them being league cup doubles. During this time he also won the Confed cup with the National team. This stunning period of success for Miller came between the ages of 26-30. Then it was off for a season in China, before retiring at his final club Trakia FC in Bulgaria.

But before anything else Miller was a player famed for succeeding with only 5 play intelligence, so our question to him was how do rate your own intelligence?

I was never going to be an academic, but I’m not an idiot if that’s what you’re getting at. Low Play Intelligence doesn’t affect how fast you train, just on the pitch. Football intelligence and general intelligence are different thing.

Should you ever write a biography, we came with a title from Wodonga to Bulgaria, what do you think?

Haha, if it stopped when my playing career ended then it would be spot on. Perhaps there should be a post career section, coming home without leaving.

How so?

In Bulgaria, I run a chain of car repair outlets. It’s a never ending supply of income. Do a good job for a reasonable price and the customers return. Though that doesn’t say much for their driving skills.

A great player condemned to the bench and reserves of the national team because he was a short passing specialist in an era of wing play. He may have only had 8 speed, but passing, stamina, ball control and tackling were all 9’s and 10’s. We already have 2 other Glasston greats in the squad with Rowdon and Howard, Christini’s addition to the squad completes the trifecta of Glasston’s truly great players.

Rowdon is the only other one club player to make the squad, Christini is the second and they both come from the same club. That alone tells about the Glasston system of player development, think long term and let your squad play out their full careers.

At Glasston if you’re good enough you’ll retire there. Over the span of his Glasston career he won 2 A-League titles and 3 National Cups.

You were introduce into the National team setup just before the wings craze began, then relegated to the reserves and a few friendlies after the 2012 Confed Cup and 2013 World Cup qualifiers?

You can’t stop progress or someone finding a way to exploit the system that makes you go from an integral part of the first team, to a redundant player within a season.

You watched on from the stands as they Confed Cup was lifted, does that sour the achievement?

Well in some way it does, but the guys that played did a great job. I mean Australia winning the Confed Cup, the chances of it happening are so slim, you need a combination of tactical nouse, a good draw in the group stage, then luck to avoid the strongest sides in the playoffs and a terminal red card during matches. We had all of that come together. With the size of our club based, it’s unlikely to ever happen again.

Plus even though I didn’t play, I still have a medal as the whole squad received them regardless of who played the games. So I’m happy for them, but I would have loved being on the pitch.

For a player many won’t remember Connor Limmer won more than you’d expect, he was a solid midfielder you could rely on to make the tackle, hit the pass and run out the game. His 8 speed and 6 aerial passing prevented him from being an elite player when the game changed, but with 9 stamina, passing, tackling and ball control he was a formidable midfielders at local club level.

Duffield United was his original club and thankfully he was a youth before name changes came along, or I’m sure Grinner would’ve changed it to Duffield Duffield. Before his first sale to Dribbler FC nothing really happened, but while there they won 3 A-League titles, 3 national up, 2 league/cup doubles and a season 7 cup.

A quick glance at the Dribblers current list shows they began a rebuild, but gave up soon after and have remained inactive for several seasons. His next sale took him back to Duffield United and won an A-League title with them, before being sold on again as another side went into a prolonged period of trying to rebuild and losing interest multiple times, only being completely inactive last season for the first time.

His season in Division 1 with Grantow was uneventful, then he came to my club, Amputees FC. He only spent one season with me before retiring, which after spending 2 million AUD was slightly frustrating, and this was before the new retirement, so his career simply ended.

Connor Limmer showed me the quality of player I needed to develop in order win the A-League and become a competitive club. Before I bought him I’d never got above Div 1, in his season with me we achieved promotion to the A-League.

You work as a coach for me now, would you say you’ve retired?

No, but I can’t complain, training the youngsters is thoroughly rewarding.

Any players kids that I should especially keep my eye on?

Well Graham maxed in AP at 6, a shame given his talent elsewhere, he’s a wait and what his tackling will be. Our graduating keeper Phillip Ludwick sent everyone into a what the… moment when he decided to become a striker, but maybe we can change his mind yet yet.

Other than that Dalton Finden looks good, cross the finger with that one, so far so good and I don’t want to jinx it, maybe we already have by discussing him.

Another Gods Eleven player makes the list, along with Brian Beattie. I wasn’t around back then and neither Beattie or Forrest played in side at the same time as each other. Which is crazy! Having 2 players of this quality come through your club and sell them on for the cash is ridiculous. These are once in a generation players, sell them and your club goes no where.

But I need to move on, he was sold to Crimson Eagles during their initial period of the game and retired there. This period time including his entire national team career in which he’s the 2nd highest scorer for Australia in World Cup and Confed Cup games. His career at Crimson Eagles mirrored Whitmore for success with 1 A-League Title, 3 national cups and a season 9 cup.

Not many players for Australia have scored more goals than cup games played?

It could’ve been more had I not been subject to bouts of clumsiness, don’t get me wrong I was great at individual skills and touch. But I got reading the play and anticipating where to be before the ball was played horribly wrong at times.

Do you play much these days?

No, but I’ll have to now. Finden played in the first league, any chance at lining up alongside him?

I’ll keep it in mind.

I’ve no idea who Bye were before they changed their name as a farewell, but Bluedean was the username.

Fazey was young while at Bye, yet he was there when they won the A-League in season 37. His first sale was his last, spending the rest of his career at Shrewsbury Biscuits FC. Including all his national team career, which was cruelly spent in the reserves and friendly experimentation pre-qualifying matches.

At the end of his career his overall ability was almost on par with Murdock Rizzardo skills wise, yet because he was in the national team at the same time and played the same position he didn’t even make the bench because Pickhills was the preferred utility option.

At Shrewsbury Fazey won an A-League title in Season 51 and Season 15 Cup Season 46. Missing out on the National Cup season 53 and both Division Cup Season 52 & 53 – AU-CA-US Top League-Div1 because of retirement.

How do you feel about the lack of opportunities you had with the National Team?

Not much you can do at it. I would have loved to play more but I had to contend myself with a few friendlies. So I learnt to forget about it, focusing on my club form and the side was just coming good when I was on the way out. Ahhh, unfortunate really, but again there was little you can do when age starts to catch up.

Pickhills lead the Australian Youth Academy from the Div 3 into the A-League for two seasons of 5th place finishes. With a best A-League haul of 36 goals in their final competitive season before a brief sale to Woodbury for a month while they were still in Division 1. I’m not sure why you would buy a player only to sell them on a month later with the high taxes reducing the profit margin, but we’ll never know why as Mylanta has left the game.

It was then on to Poland where his goals led Victoria Torun from division 5 to 3 before being sold mid-season 44 on to his final club Virao Extreme in Chile for another 4 seasons before retiring in season 48. 3 of those season were spent in the Campeonato Chileno, being relegated in the 3rd and the last in Division 1.

During this time he played a key role in taking Virao Extreme to their only ever National Cup title season 46. Coincidently this was Pickhills only Domestic Cup success with any club he played for and the period in which the 2013 Confederations Cup took place.

In the final years of your career everything came together?

I’m not sure why, some players go through their careers continuously helping out lower league teams to improve before being transferred to another one. I was lucky being a striker and could make a tangible difference to game results through scoring. Every club I played more than a season with was promoted, Virao Extreme eventually got demoted, but before that we won a national cup, the only one I’ve ever won.

This was happening at the same time as Australia won the Confed Cup?

Strange how after years of hard toil, it all happens at the same time. That was the only national team cup I was actively involved in from start to finish. Even as a sub I played most games. There wasn’t much left in me after that though. Perhaps one season more but it’s better to go out on a high.

Belton Fordham was there for all of Crystal Phallus’s high’s and low’s.  Reaching the A-League, then selling up without realising the dream of winning the A-League, because of the Arrested Developers dominance. From youth to his first transfer he spent 15 seasons at Crystal Phallus, in other words he was 30 when he left for the first of 2 teams and 3 seasons in the Polish 2nd division.

His final transfer was listed in the knowledge that he had started to plan his retirement. Eric from Shrewsbury Biscuits and myself were interested in his services, but the price for a player who had 1 or 2 season left in him was too high and we both pulled out before SC Sardaukar put in the final bid. As things turned out his SC Sardaukar released him at the end of that season, a sad end for a player who could have retired with an Australian team.

Fordham won no national cups or premier league titles. His entrance into the national team came when Pincini began to deteriorate, replacing him as the starting winger. Belton was quick, his 10 speed made him a handful for any defender, deteriorations got to him in the end but still he deserves a spot in the legends team.

You were part of teams that were building towards something, but never achieved what they set out to do?

That’s true, at Crystal Phallus the results didn’t come and we finished mid table in all our A-League seasons. This led Damo to getting very frustrated with the game, as when he looked at the side on paper he thought he had a title contender, so he went into each of our 3 A-League seasons with high hope only to be let down. It eventually got to him and we were all sold.

Eric and I were bidding in your last transfer but it went to high, do players track who’s bidding on them?

Actually no, we’re blind from who is bidding on us. But we couldn’t influence the outcome anyway, you simply go to the highest bidder and hope it’s a decent club. Unfortunately no premier league contenders bought me and well, I was released. Though it happens to even the best as Rizzardo got the same raw deal.

Hop Skip Jump made an impressive run to reach the final from Division 1 and faced the last remaining A-League side in Abbotsford FC. Hop Skip Jump may have fancied their chances before the opening whistle, but their hopes were extinguished as the first half ended 1-4 against them.

A first half hat-trick to man of the match Antonio Norman who ended the game with 4 goals, put Abbotsford way in front and it was a lead they didn’t relinquish, extending a 3 goal first half lead to 4 by full time.

The willingness of Abbotsford to change their formation turned the game 11 v 9 in their favour, attacking through the middle with their favoured short passing game to bypass the negated wing defender of Narraweena.

All credit must go to Abbotsford for digging in and taking the risk to run a one sided defence which Bondi countered by going down the opposite. Even out of position in defence for the whole game they made it a contest, who knows, had they guessed left instead of right what would have happened. But that’s speculation.

Man of the Match was Bondi keeper Caine Morey, in his final U/23 season he showed how valuable final year players are. He saved every shot that Abbotsford fired on target and missed only one pass. Given that Bondi only scored 1 goal, he was the reason they won.

Truly amazing that Shrewsbury won this game with 9 men on the field when the final whistle blew. Man of the match Flavio Razzo scored both his goals when Shrewsbury had 11 men.

Then on half time the game changed, luckily Carleton Knack is a striker and the defensive balance remained when he was sent off. Try as they might Rangers couldn’t score, even when Shrewsbury went down to 9 men and Winston Reid left the midfield, shunting another striker back into midfield. Rangers strikers could only score with the last kick of the game.

A very close game, Rangers –Real Madrid deserved to win through more possession and shots on goal. But everything else was statistically very close. The game was turned when Hop Skip Jump Brian Benton received his 2nd yellow card in the 89th minute. Regular time couldn’t separate either team, yet being a man down allowed Rangers to dominate extra time and get the golden goal to proceed.

Joachim and Rangers were clearly better than the rest if you look at the points alone. Ranger lost both games to Joachim, with Joachim drawing with Glasston and surprisingly Kangaroos. But on goals scored and conceded Glasston weren’t far off Rangers and Narraweena were close Glasston. Yet Rangers got through in 2nd place.

Talk about an even group, below Skoolage at least on points 2nd to 6th all showed they could have progressed. Shrewsbury deserved it more through conceding less goals than all teams in the group.

Only 3 sides were going to make it through. Both sides that progressed had about the same goal difference, yet Bondi conceded less and in this circumstance propelled them into first place. Abbotsford’s extra scoring capabilities meant they had the edge over SYD.

The Red Devils were a cut above the rest, then it was a battle between Hop Skip Jump and last seasons winner The Smoking Tree. Though most of the winning squad from last season were now too old to compete in U/xx competitions as they become a stronger senior team. Having said that they were still good enough the challenge for a spot in the playoffs, it all came down to one point, leaving last season champions in the group they began.
